That's great!  I know a lot of people upset they weren't given the bear proof cans!  Does it cost more/monthly charge?

I was told on the phone that there is no extra charge. Even if there were though I'd happily pay it to keep the little bandit out of my trash. I'm just wondering why I wasn't given them to begin with., maybe it's something you have to request?

Until about a year ago, as near as I can tell from what people have told me, you automatically got them.  We got them without specifying 3 years ago.  Don't know why the change, but I'll pass along the info!

Just called CR&R, took all of a minute to get them.  Just had to give them my name and phone number to verify the account.  Thanks for the info

They automatically gave them to us when we moved up a year ago, but the latch on one was broken, so I had to call and have them switch it out.  Replaced it the next day.  Always happy with their service so far (just wish they'd pick up TVs larger than 42" or whatever it is, because that big screen from the previous owner is still in my garage!).

For those of you on Bobolink and surrounding street,  I heard my trash can get knocked over. I think it's, safe to assume it was the bear again. He/she comes between 10pm and 5ish am. We have the bear cans so hopefully he stops.  He's left a trail previously and we've figured out he's coming from the back of the house. So just a friendly heads up to be careful.

On a side note, I'm not dumb enough to actually go outside and see if it actually was a bear and not someone trying to break into the car...chances are its an animal. Ugh I hate when its dark! I really need a trusty pair of night vision binoculars!

I want you to notice that when a bear comes to my house, it makes himself at home, relaxes, enjoys a little snack, and even smiles for the camera.  This one came by at three this morning for a bit of conversation and a bite to eat.

Here's a video that was taken just prior to the still shots above. Listen to the dogs barking once the bear knocks down the feeder.

We very disheartened this morning to discover that some one or thing knocked over and raided Karen's beloved bee hive.
She hasnt been able to get close enough yet to see any detail as to what was the cause.

She will go out and try to rescue the survivors and rebuild and relocate the hive later this morning.

 :(

If it was a bear chances are good he'll be back (speaking from prior experience).  Recommend electric fencing with a ground grid around outside perimeter (so shocks the feet).  Hope you're able to save the hive.

It was a bear alright.

My wife was able to rebuild the hive yesterday and relocate it inside our chain link fenced yard. She was able to recover most but not all of the honeycomb. which we had to leave on the ground.

We are not sure if the bees will stay since there was unusual swarming activity on the outside of the relocated hive.

This morning at 5AM, there was a rustling outside of our bedroom window which startled me and sent a bit of a shiver down my spine.  I got up, shined a flashlight out the bedroom window to discover an adult black bear rooting around the tree where the hive was previously located.

I got my robe and flipflops, camera, and flashlight and went out on the rear deck and turned on the backyard floods.
I started yelling and screaming, shining my flashlight and waving my arms.... and the bear took off running. I probably should have taken the picture first.  Hind sight.

The bear was last seen running west up the 800 block of Lark toward upper Edna.

The relocated hive was not disturbed... at least as of this morning... but who knows how long that will last.
May have to go the electric wire route assuming the bees are still occupying the hive.

Randy,  I can imagine you in your costume trying to scare away the bear!  You would have scared even Karen away!  Hope to see you at Wrightwood Jeep Wllys Day!!
