Karen has been spending her weekends in September dealing with her parents health issues and baby sitting down the hill, so I been hanging with her as much as I can.  She believes she has things squared away so I hope to show up for breakfast more regularly.

We plan to make it to Willys/Jeep Day this weekend and we are planning to do the chili and salsa tasting.

The only decision we have left to make is which Jeep to bring...  ??? The one true American Jeep... the ones with the square headlights or
one of our Russian Jeeps sans machine gun  ;)

See you all this weekend... assuming I dont wind up as bear food.  If you find some scat with pieces of green terry cloth or orange flip flop... you know what happened to me.   ;D

Or if we see a black bear driving your Russian jeep (sans machine gun) this weekend, then we will also know.  ;)

I saw a very large bear this morning (5:22am) at the 4-way stop of Apple/MtnView.  I stopped and it ran in front of my car, then  headed North into the yard of the house with brick pillars.  Only the 2nd time I've seen one up here in 22yrs. Very cool!

I bet I saw your bear this morning MojaveSidecar.  MtnView/Apple is just a few blocks down from where you are. He/She is a healthy looking bear.  Must be all that honey you're feeding it!   :-X  ;D

who the hec chases a baby bear?  The proper way to haze the bear is to say "bad bear go home" and scare it off.  You don't ever chase them.

Kinda hope momma bear comes to the rescue and puts the fear of god in whom ever is chasing the bear.

I saw a picture of the baby bear on the local Wrightwood FB group. It looked amazingly young, famished and skinny.  I hope he makes it.

A bear cub described as being about as big as a small dog was reported on Table Mountain near the JPL facility without a mother on 10-22-2012.  The next day a small bear cub without a mother was reported at Mt. High west.  This may be the same little bear cub that was seen in town a few days ago near apple street.  It appears that this bear cub has been separated from its mother and may not survive.

Is it hunting season?  Sorry, but I don't follow the seasons or how they pertain to bears.

I think the cub is without his mother anymore. My dogs and I spotted the cub in town on Saturday and heshe was down highway 2 a few hours later. In trying to find out what to do to insure the safety of this little guy I was saddened to learn about bear hunting in CA. Why bears? Do you eat the meat? Can you use the fur? Is it just a thrill kill? Rhetorical question with no need for replies.

My main thought for this post is that I'm afraid to call the Dept. in CA that handles the bears to report the cub for fear that it will be killed. Has anyone dealt with this type of concern that can make a valuable suggestion?

We've run across hunters in the area only once.  They "weren't from around here", IIRC.  Our mountains may very well be a destination...as in some place to go to from some distance away...and do the thing they enjoy.  Much the way we might go to Vegas or something.

The Forest Service personnel who are members of this board will know for sure who these people tend to be.

Just drive down Lone Pine Canyon on a weekend morning and you'll see plenty of hunters.  A truck parked in every turnout, it seems. After driving that road several times a week for a year, it's a little disconcerting...I can't imagine what they think they're shooting at.  I saw a chipmunk run across the road once...

My friend was hiking this past weekend at Grassy Hollow and ran into 4 hunters up there. To me, they should not be allowed in areas where people go hiking and walk their dog, especially near the visitors center. I will not be walking out there anytime soon by myself or with my dogs. I was told people have also seen hunters (years past) on the JPL road and near the Blue Ridge hiking areas. Are they deer hunting or bear hunting and when will hunting season be over? Not soon enough for me, thats for sure!!

Same here, Sage. Last year I was walking on the little path that runs between the bottom of Wright Mountain Road to the bottom of Sheep Creek Wash. Parallels the 2. I came across a hunter sitting on his tailgate with this honking big rifle. Geez, you can SEE dozens of houses from where he was! I called the Sheriff.

And from the Big Pines Facebook page:

Hunting season for Deer and Bear opens Saturday, Oct 13th. Deer season runs through Nov 11th with up to 5,500 tags issued, while Bear season ends Dec 30th, or when the CDFG determines that 1,700 bears have been reported taken. Quail season opens Saturday, Oct 20th and runs through Jan 27th.

Quail!!!???  Sheesh, I'm glad there is a 'no shooting' sign at the foot of my street. I must have 50 or more of the beautiful little critters eating in my front yard at dusk.
