Camping spots in Wrightwood

My son wants to camp in WW Labor Day weekend.  He will be sleeping in a tent, so no hookups are needed.  Any suggestions?  What does it cost?

Table Top Mountain, Jackson Lake around 14.00 a night

If he likes it on top of mountains, Blue Ridge and Guffy are great camp grounds.  Cost is only having an Adventure Pass.

Sometimes crowds are an issue on holiday weekends.  I haven't used any of those campgrounds on a holiday weekend, so I can't speak from personal experience.  Perhaps others on this forum can elaborate.

So, which camp grounds have water?  I'm pretty sure Blue Ridge and Guffy do not have water.  Is my memory correct here?

I have been trying to get ahold of someone regarding Table Mountain info, but the phone number listed on the web just rings. It looks like they aren't taking reservations after September 23rd.  Can this be right?  I was hoping to do some camping late September/early October, once the weather is cooler. If anyone knows about this, let me know.  Thanks!

You can just go there and get a spot!  They just won't do the reservation but they have first come first serve until they close the campground!

I had previously posted this under Table Mountain topic:

The past few seasons they closed on November 15, 2007.  In regards to cold temps it depends on what you think is cold.  It is not unusual for the mountains to get into the mid 30's to 40's at anytime during the summer.  I am most comfortable in the 20 - 50 degree range of temps.  But some folks think they are freezin to death at 60 degrees.

The manager of Table Mtn, Lake & Mtn Oak is Daryl Walters.  He is a very nice man.  You can reach him @ 3526 if you would like to know for sure when they are planning on closing up for the season.

In regards to campgrounds with water:

Table Mountain
Lake
Mountain Oak
Peavine
Apple Tree (when I left the water was off due to pump probs.)
Jackson Flat (group campground)
Lupine has a small creek... although you would have to treat the water.
Sycamore Flat in Big Rock Creek

Please note when temps get to freezing usually by the end of October the water is shut off. 

I have seen all of the campgrounds fill up on holidays.  If they are still allowing campfires down there it could be hard to find a spot.  If you can leave on Thursday to have a better chance of first come first serve sight that is best.  Rather than Fridays.

Thanks for the info!  I do have that number for Table Mountain.  Will keep trying until I reach someone.  I prefer cooler daytime temps, since we have a tent.  Don't mind if the temps get lower at night - it's more cuddly that way!  I saw on Table Mountain's site they aren't allowing fires - only propane cooking.  Will double check on that when I get ahold of Daryl.

My son stayed at Table Mountain over the 3-day weekend.  I'd never been up there before, so I got to see what a beautiful campground it is - and huge.  Each site is a good distance from the other sites.  You can reserve sites online - but it's $9 more.  The nightly fee is $17.  No fires will be allowed.  Bathrooms are well distributed throughout.  To reserve online, you need 4 days.  I ended up getting there at 7:00 Friday morning and set up a tent which held his spot.

Just as a heads up....

Forest Service campgrounds technically are to be occupied by a person/s for the first 24 hours.  Just so you know. 

Daryl lives in Mountain Oak C.G. during the summer season.   Denny is the camp host at Table Mtn.  although, he does not have a land line there.  Daryl & Denny keep in contact via 2 way radios.

Oh, I forgot to mention that.  I put the tent up, but my son showed up that evening.

You mean once you set up the camp you can't leave for 24 hours?    When I camp I make it a practice to set up the tent during the day and then leave to get food supplies.

One must occupy the tent at night.  In other words, you can't set up a tent one day and turn up the next morning.  The day you set up the tent, you must be there overnight.  Otherwise you can come and go as you please.

Okay, that's a little better.   I guess that's the policy that keeps people from coming in like on Wednesday or Thursday and set up the tent and "squatting" the campsite for the weekend.

Table Mountain is a beautiful, it is so huge and the sites are spaced far enough apart that it seems so much more private.  It is one of our favorite places to go camping.  We were up at Silverwood and what a nightmare that was, the camping spots were right on top of each other!

That's good to know, that you can come and go.  I have friends I would visit in WW, and wouldn't want to be somehow locked out of the site if we came back late.
