Ladies and Gentlemen:

Recently I have had several people ask about earthquake information related to the TRI-ANGLE OF LIFE.
Some have asked that this be passed on throughout the organization. After speaking to the folks at CALEMA and the County Fire USAR you need to be aware that this information and that the individuals and organization involved has been discredited by multiple organizations.

Below is additional information from Mark Basset director of Southern Region CALEMA.  Please feel free to forward this on to other people.  Under no circumstances should the Tri-Angle of Life be taught.

Zack Mullennix, CRO
San Bernardino County Fire ECS

As is now common after large earthquakes, an email with "new" advice for what to do during earthquakes ("triangle of life") is being circulated by well-intending people who don't know that the information is dangerous and that its advocate has been broadly discredited.

You may be receiving questions about this information. If so, please send them the following message (or rewrite it as needed). Schools, businesses, and families are changing their policies in ways that will expose many people to serious injury, and we must act quick before the information spreads further.

Thank you!

Mark

Dear XXXX,

Thank you for contacting me about this issue. The email you received has been forwarded for many years. While it seems credible, it actually contains dangerous recommendations and is promoted by someone who has been broadly discredited.

To learn more, please visit: www.earthquakecountry.org/dropcoverholdon

PLEASE send this link to the person who sent the "triangle of life"
information to you, and request that they send it to whoever sent it to them and also to whoever they sent it. This way the
misinformation can be corrected.

For what to do during an earthquake, visit: www.dropcoverholdon.org

If you are in California, registration is now open for the 2010 Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill on October 21, 2010! Visit www.ShakeOut.org for more details and to register.

THANK YOU so much for responding about the triangle of life being foolishness at best and potentially dangerous at worst. My brother is the Director of the Earth Sciences Department at CSUF and has a PhD in Geophysics. I can honestly say that few things get him as heated up as this topic. He once spent an hour (at least) explaining how this whole thing came about. Now I try to repeat his logic to people who, with well placed intentions, try to convince myself and others that this makes perfect sense. The more people with credible positions that de-bunk this quickly growing myth the better!

One thing that I learned during emergency evacuations and such is that your emergency kits need to contain supplies for extra people, not just those in your home.
There will always be one or more friends, family members, or acquaintances with whom you will want/need to share during times of need.
Happened to me during the evacuation.
Pack some extra.
