Tire suggestions-2004 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4
« on: Nov 04, 08, 07:11:09 PM »
Looking for comments (good and bad) for replacement tires for a Ford Explorer XLT 4x4.  Current tires are BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A (245/65/R17).  They have performed well, 35K miles and still have tread left but the vehicle seems to be swimming or fishtailing at high speed with very small steering wheel movement.  Suspension and shocks have been examined and is ok.  Vehicle has 83K miles on it.

Driving is mostly on the city streets and long trips over to Arizona and back and from OC to WW.  Driving in WW during the snow and ice during the winter.  I rarely have had to chain-up the Explorer during snow and ice conditions.

Want a tire that will provide a relatively smooth ride for my everday driving but has the ability to handle light off-road and snow/ice.

The ones I am considering are:

Michelin Cross Terrain SUV,  BF Goodrich Rugged Train T/A (again) and BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO.

Used and loved BF Goodrich All Terrain for many many years on my 4x4 Jeep and a 2 wheel drive Chevy 1500 Truck. Obviously, the 2 wheel drive just cannot hack it in the ice/snow....

....but, my last set of tires for the Jeep were Big 0 Tires brand, Big Foot. The best tires we have ever owned and awesome for traction in the snow/ice. These are also All Terrain.
The maneuverability in rough terrain as well as snow are awesome. I am hooked on these now.  I just recently purchased them for my 2500 Chevy Truck and they are wonderful. And much much more quiet than the Mud or Rugged Trail.
Good Luck!

I'll second the Big O Bigfoot tires.  We have a 2003 Explorer Sport Trac, and when the time came to replace the original tires, I went with 265/60R16 Bigfoot tires.

Seem to have good traction in snow and ice, and they are wearing well.

Good luck!
