Cabin Names

I've been lurking here on this forum for a while - mostly reading Wrightwood history and never having a reason to post anything until now. My husband and I moved our family here last summer (2010) and have owned our cabin since November 2009. We started as weekenders but soon fell in love with Wrightwood (and our cabin) so we couldn't live anywhere else! Consider this my official introduction!

Our cabin was built in 1953. I really wanted to purchase an older cabin (20's or 30's)and we looked at several, but we found the older ones on the market at the time had been renovated to the point where once you stepped inside, you couldn't tell it was an old cabin! We loved ours - it had good bones and most of its interior charm. It had been adorned with modern siding and a small addition but nothing we couldn't restore to former glory!

We are indeed in love with our cabin and wonder if it ever held a name. We have been trying to think of one, but I keep hoping I will find a remnant in the attic that gives us a clue!

Does anybody on this forum know what year Wrightwood cabins were given house numbers? I also thought it might be fun to start a cabin name registry for Wrightwood, to preserve the history of some of the older (and adding the newer) cabins.

What a wonderful idea!  You may want to check with the local Historical Society who have so much information on the history of our village. 

Tom Pinard who started the Mountineer Progress many years ago is also a wealth of information would be a good contact as well.

Pat Craig is another valuable sourse of information.

my grandma and grandpa built a cabin here in the early 60s. I have a small photo of it, and was always wondering what street it was on, as neither of them remember. My grandma remembers there was a hill behind the cabin that my uncle used to sled down...(like most of Wrightwood!). I wish I could find that cabin, but chances are its been remodeled and doesn't look like the photo.

Our place was built in the late 40's or very early 1950's. The name was given by my grandmother and named Winter Tyme. I have the original sign and will restore it or a new version of it. It has been in the family since the wee early 50's, like 52/53. It is located at Cedar and Oriole.

I think us Pinion Hillbillies need to start that tradition with our houses...start naming them.  I think I will name mine something really distinct....

I wish that we had taken more pictures.  My Grandparents started visiting Wrightwood in 1930.  In 1936 my family built the cabin on the Northwest corner of Pine and Robin.

They bought the place we still own in Robin Circle in 1941.  Please take pictures of your experiences today to be given to the Wrightwood Historical Museum in the future:

Take pictures and document the history of your place.  In 50 to 100 years your offspring will be glad you did.

NOTE: These documents have been presented to the Wrightwood Historical Museum to take there place with many others that document the History of Wrightwood...

Hi all,

I've been coming up to Wrightwood, since the ripe old age of 6 months (April 1944). My grandfather built our cabin in 1925. He put a second story on the place in 1946 and bought the lot next door at that time, as a buffer.

My grandpa named the cabin "Pair-a-dice Lodge".....he loved to gamble! 1417 Helen Street. Very soon, his great-great grand-daughter will begin to visit the "Lodge".

Nice history Gary!!! I know of three other cabins in WW that had hide-away room/bars, where they gambled and liqour was stored and consumed during that time period

Well I don't know how much they gambled there, but there was always a crowd there from the heyday of the old MGM studios (1930's),  on weekends as just a getaway place! Lots of behind-the-camera folks. Wrightwood was the hangout place for Hollywood's golden years.

Even though our Dream house turned into the nightmare on Snowbird Rd. we are still VERY blessed to be in this charming community (snow players excluded). I wake up every morning and thank God for my neighbors, and friends here. The house will come together, and all of WW will be invited to a shindig once we can breath.

I too would love to know the cabin name of my home. My log cabin on Oriole Rd (lower) was built in the late 1920s. I have lived here since 1998 and would love to know the history of this cozy cabin.
