Recycle and County Landfill
« on: Feb 10, 14, 06:32:16 PM »
Anybody have any ideas about how I get rid of old TVs, VCRs and other electronic equipment?  Does the Recycle place at the County Dump take these items or do you just dump them with the trash in the landfill?  I know here in Burbank these items and computers, computer monitors etc., are collected at Burbank's Recycle Center but then "e-wasted" for Burbank residents at no charge.

Also what about an old porcelain toilet?  Recycle or in the trash?  I'll be doing some major spring cleaning and cleaning out our garage and making a few trailer trips to the dump.  It hasn't been done since about 1969 and it has collect a generation of electronic devices and other objects.  ;D

I know that anything metal can be salvaged by the recycle stop at the dump.

Don't know about the dump, but environmentally best to recycle electronics because of the heavy metals that can be in them, etc.

Here's a link that can be helpful:

As for old cell phones, most wireless providers provide a drop off if they are quite old or you can also sell newer models online. **The dropoff phones often go to a group that recycles them for abused women's organizations so that they can have their own phone.**

Here at work, if it has a circuit board, battery or copper wiring, it is "e-wasted".  Same in Burbank.  Just don't know about San Bernardino County and whether I can drop off the same things at their Recycle place near the dump or if Wrightwoodians just throw it in the trash.

Of you have CR & R trash service here.. they will do two pickups per year of outsize waste .. like a toilet. Plus, I believe they'll take e-waste in these. They pick up these loads here in PH on Thurs. Just call them. You can include a number of things in each load. Just call them. cheryl o7o

RobertW, the kinds of things you are looking to dispose of are the types of items that can be taken to the annual Hazmat dropoff here in Wrightwood, but that isn't until Sept. or Oct.  I recently had my 33 year old oven and microwave replaced, and the person who did the installing took my old ones to the dump and was able to leave them at the proper dropoff site there.  All he needed was my dump card.  I would think electronic items could also be taken there, but it would be wise to check first.

As for the old toilet, just put it out in your yard and put silk flowers in it!   ;D  (I have seen real flowers planted in old toilets too, but silk or plastic ones don't have to be watered.)

Being Weekenders we don't pay for CR&R trash service.  We can always just take our trash home with us.  We used to have neighbors that wouldn't mind us using their own barrel to drop our bag of trash in, but they've moved and we've found our trash pulled out of the barrel and thrown back on our property.  Chuck at the Blueridge has given us a key to the restuarant's trash bin and we can always use the open bin by the Memorial Park, or USFS bins so it is no longer a problem.

I can haul these items to the dump myself and I have a dump card we use once a year.  May take 4 punches for the month and an extra one, but I just wanted to know if I could drop them off there.  I remember with my last Junk load when we cleaned out the shed we were backed up to the usual trash bays and one of the workers told us to go ahead and put all the metal over to the side and he'd take care of it.  I don't mind making a stop at the Recycle portion before going to the trash bays.  I just don't want to start dumping the toilet or TVs and be told I can't do so.
