As most amateurs know, we usually have to share or "Co-channel" repeater frequencies with other repeaters. And that is the case with our 147.240+ PL 91.5 repeater. We have two co-channel repeaters on the frequency, one down south in San Diego County on Monument Peak using PL 103.5, and the other on Duck Mtn. (Santa Clarita area) currently in carrier squelch mode (no PL encode or decode). These are very reasonable co-channel coordinations, with plenty of distance between user areas, yielding very low signals from the other systems here in Wrightwood.
The Monument Peak repeater seems to present a signal here that is usually weak at an S1-S2 signal strength. That shouldn't be a problem, and if WWCG users enable PL Decode on their radios with our 91.5 Hz tone, they will never hear Monument Peak. But what a few of us have noticed in the last 3-6 months, is that the signal from Monument occasionally opens our squelch even though their output signal has PL 103.5, while we have Decode enabled on our radios using PL 91.5. We shouldn't be hearing them with our Decode enabled with 91.5 Hz.
Has anyone else noticed this phenomena? If so, please share your observations. Be certain that you have decode enabled on your radio with PL 91.5 Hz. If you do, and you still intermittently hear the weak signal from Monument Peak (KA6DAC), please respond with where you are located, which radio you are using, what antenna you are using, and how strong the signal was when you heard the other repeater.
We are actively working with the ECRA Team who own and operate the Monument Peak repeater. Having more observations may assist us in closing this issue.
