Yes, you CAN see Mt. Whitney from our viscinity..

I've attempted this photo before with lesser lenses with iffy results.  The consensus here was that it was not possible to photograph Mt. Whitney from the San Gabriel mountains.  NOT TRUE!  I used a 600mm lens I purchased to photograph the eclipse a few months ago - decided to bring it with me on Hwy 2 today and noticed the excellent visibility.  Only with this lens was I able to resolve real detail and you bet I GOT IT.  And it can be confirmed in Google maps.



If you use the Measure Distance tool (right click) to draw a line from the point of the photo here: https://goo.gl/maps/8jJy6W59Z9K2 to Mt. Whitney it passes directly through Edwards AFB in the foreground and just to the left of a pair of volcanic cinder cones near California City as seen in the photo.  That, folks, is 155 miles of visibility.  Probably even better visibility were it not for the curvature of the earth.

The link to Google Maps shown above is where I stood for this and the previous attempts.  Don't be afraid of the strange look to the URL - that is just a shortened version that Google offers so it doesn't end up being a mile-long URL.

Amazing pic, Joe!  Apparently, the visibility all over the state was spectacular yesterday.  My sister went to Napa to be with one of her sons and a couple of his friends.  They took a hot air balloon ride over the Napa Valley, and she said the pilot told them that there are only about 10 days a year there, when the visibility was that good.  They could see all the way to San Francisco, she said.  I'm just relishing how nice it is here in the Wood, for the moment....

Yes it is.  Also in the photo is Red Rock Canyon state park seen ask the dark colored scarps middle-right in the photo.  I'm really amazed at the distances of landmarks that lie between me and Mt. Whitney.  That's a 3+ hour drive.  I'm also thrilled that it's not a vague apparition - there is plenty of detail including the silhouettes of trees in those hills that are 85 miles away!
