Local mountain SCE fire cameras...
« on: Mar 12, 19, 11:09:57 AM »
Heard about this on the news the other day.  Edison has installed many camera around their coverage area to keep from being blamed for every fire.  They can be accessed by the public here: http://www.alertwildfire.org/orangecoca/

I've found that in general there are two cameras at each location.  One camera that spins around 90 degrees at a time, and one that is stationary.   There are some exceptions, like Mt. Wilson, where neither camera spins.  This is preferable.  Scroll down and left-click on the camera image you want to see (find the stationary camera of the two) and it displays in the larger box at the top of the page.  What's not mentioned anywhere is that you can right-click the larger image at the top of the page and request a time-lapse of varying lengths.  I'm not aware of any other mountain webcams that provide this, so this is great.  This is like the Mt. Wilson Towercam, but improved by providing movies.  The map on the right allows you to find the locations of the cameras, but clicking on the icons only provides you the name of the camera.  You can then find that name in the images below and select it.  Last note: you need a decent PC/laptop/device to play the movies smoothly.  The movie player spits out a lot of images very quickly and a lesser machine will have difficulty keeping up.  My relatively new, but relatively cheap laptop has a hard time keeping up.  There are two cameras on Wrightwood's Table Mountain, however only the spinning one is up.  Other nearby locations are Sunset Peak (spins) above Glendora, San Sevaine (which is above Fontana/Lytle Creek, one spins the other points at the cajon pass and Lytle Creek).  Enjoy.
