Where have the small birds gone?
« on: Jul 08, 20, 09:22:15 AM »
Has anybody else in town noticed a decrease in the populations of certain small bird species?  My house is usually a frenzy with birds in the morning.  We still see the goldfinches, house finches, and all the larger bird species in normal numbers, but have not seen a few species in any numbers comparable to previous years.  Specifically nuthatches, juncos, and mountain chickadees.  Has any body else seen any great numbers of these birds around town, or noticed a significant drop off in populations?

I can identify birds about as well as I can identify engine parts, but I have to say that we are not seeing the usual amount of birds we used to get. And I am not being awakened by chirping birds in the morning like I have every other summer.

I have a plethora of juncos, chickadees and nuthatches and lesser goldfinches.  Also lots of grosbeaks and towhees and of course,..million of jays!  Tons of them.  The chickadees wake me up in the morning as do the finches.  They are relentless, but adorable

They must all be outside my window at 4:30 in the morning. Every morning. But that's better than City living and traffic!

Right?  I swear...around 4:30 the birds wake up and start having spirited discussions and arguing...loudly!  I love it

That's lovely that they are still around.  I will have to do some looking at what I can do to attract some more small bird varieties.  We have always had a ton of Juncos and Chickadees, but for some reason this year they have not been around.  What type of seed have the small birds been enjoying?  I very rarely see the Towhees.  It would be a treat to attract some to the house.

We have not had as many also, we were blaming it on a lot more Ravens this year. They are also keeping the ring neck pigeons at about 2 not 20!
