Many years ago I almost went over the side about 500ft from those coordinates.  I lost control on piles of cinders - at night it was very hard to discern them from the tar strip crack patching Caltrans does/did.  The only thing that stopped me was a low berm that Caltrans created by putting asphalt over a dirt berm at the roadside.  I stopped so close to the edge that I had to be careful exiting the vehicle - my wheels came to rest halfway up the berm.  There's a long fairly steep chute there and only one small tree would have potentially stopped me.

There's now a guardrail there, but I can still faintly see the divots my wheels left in the berm beneath it.  The guardrail does not extend across the entirety of the chute, I assume because that's the inside of a turn.  That seems to be the pattern of Caltrans' guardrail installations.  It's too bad these young people passed away there.  I've given that spot many a long look...it's where the road almost got me.

I even have an ancient video of my skid marks taken the next day - roughly 20 years ago now.  180-degree spin and slid backwards/sideways into the berm:

A more precise location where the incident happened: 34.372109, -117.782230 : https://goo.gl/maps/Uw57b11sHbUJPwJZ6

It appears they left the road and just clipped the end of a low retaining wall on the outside of a gentle curve.  I hate to speculate, but I have to wonder.  Anyhow, it's unfortunate that the choice was made not to put guardrail there.

I almost hit a big horn sheep at that same spot maybe 6 years ago. I had to break and swerve slightly. Fortunately I didn't lose control at all, but it was scary thinking how easily it would have been to go over the edge.  So sad to see this.

I've almost run into deer near there. Gotta remember to fight the urge to swerve. Brake hard, but dont risk losing control over an animal collision
