Internet Router

Hello I am new to the area. Looking to get the UIA - Fiber. Do I need to rent the router from them? if not, can anyone recommend a good router that works well on fiber?

Thank you.

Disclaimer: I don't work for UIA.  I'm not Wes, and I don't play Wes on TV.

I ran an internet service provider and in my (retired, former) professional opinion UIA is awesome.

The connection to UIA is just about as simple and straightforward as it gets.  It's plain Ethernet using DHCP and most anything will work.

I know they are not big fans of the Netgear routers because Netgear doesn't stay up to date on exploits.

Google Mesh is popular especially if you have trouble covering your whole place with one router/ap.  It's easy to set up.

If you're pretty up to speed on technology, I'd have a different recommendation, but if you understand "plain Ethernet and DHCP" you probably know what you've used and liked in the past.

Welcome! I moved up here last year in December. Love it!

When UIA sets up service, they give you a box called an ONT as a part of the base service that is similar in functionality to a Cable Modem, where it is essentially just a converter. You essentially have an Ethernet port which you can connect any normal router to and doesn't require any special configuration.

They do rent out a router for I think $10/mo if you don't have your own, but I don't know what model it is.

The router they rent is $4.95/month.  When I had UIA installed a couple years ago, I was told (by the very knowledgeable and very competent) installers that using their router instead of the (fairly new) Netgear one I had, would be easier than using the one that I already had, I think they said because with theirs, I could pick my own password instead of having to use the complicated one they would have to assign, impossible to remember.  I do not understand what any of this technical stuff is, but I do know that UIA service and support is amazing!  Whatever you do, do NOT I repeat NOT use Frontier!!!!

BTW, welcome!  I've lived up here 44-1/2 years now, and still love it.
