Cutting of Manzanita along Hwy 2
« on: Dec 05, 22, 12:49:09 AM »
Has anyone noticed that acres of the Manzanita on the north side of Hwy 2 in the recent burn area have been cut down to the ground?  Just past the last turn coming into WW across from Wright Mountain Road.  I believe that is Forest Service land but I am not sure.  Manzanita is protected in California.  I remember a few years ago Manzanita was being cut down in Lone Pine Canyon, but it was just a few bushes here and there.  This is complete destruction.  The plants may have burned but they do come back.  We ride horses in West Cajon Valley and have seen the Manzanita recover from the 2016 Blue Cut fire.  I am absolutely devastated by the lack of respect for our beautiful surroundings.

Lots of folks disregard prohibitions like cutting Manzanita or Joshua Trees.

Over four hundred Joshua Trees were cut down by the Jojoba farm between Highway 2 and Sheep Creek- On Serrano, below the highway.  Their tractors would knock down the trees and simply bury them.  There used to be quite an extensive grove there of very mature trees.  When confronted, the Chinese workers would simply pretend they didn't speak English.  The farm is owned by a group that has a number of Jojoba farms in Lucerne Valley.  I remember talking to County building and safety but they didn't seem interested in looking into it.

It is all recent.  You can tell by looking at the stumps.

I have also but not if they are cut down to the ground like the situation here.  So sad.
