Dear Neighbor,

In an effort to keep you informed, I am sharing with you the following information that has been provided to me from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

Caltrans offers up to $10,000 to drivers whose vehicles have been damaged by potholes on California freeways -- a program of renewed significance amid the roadway hazards caused by the recent series of heavy rains that have drenched the state.

If your vehicle has suffered damage due to a pothole, you may be able to get that damage reimbursed by a Caltrans program, a city government or a county government.

If you believe your vehicle damage was caused by a pothole which existed due to the fault of Caltrans, you can file a claim for reimbursement directly with Caltrans seeking $10,000 or less in reimbursement. You will want to send the claim form as well as supporting documentation to the proper Caltrans District Claims Office. No filing fee is required for claims filed with Caltrans seeking $10,000 or less from Caltrans.

A damage claim can be filed directly with the agency here (https://lcmspubcontact.lc.ca.gov/PublicLCMS/LinkTracking.php?id=508800&eaid=381393&url=https%3A%2F%2Fdot.ca.gov%2Fonline-services%2Fsubmit-damage-claim&tid=SD23C968119842)

The Caltrans website includes instructions on how to file a claim arising from such incidents, noting that the county in which it occurred must be provided. Each of the state's counties is covered by a specific District Claims Office.

Please note that if you have been reimbursed by your insurance company, you may not be eligible for compensation and also, only the registered owner may file a claim for damage to a vehicle or property.

If my office can provide additional information or assistance with this or any other state matter, please contact me at (909) 335-0271.

Thank you,
