Fences
« on: May 10, 06, 03:25:04 PM »
Recently a family has moved into what was a weekend home near my house.  Last night I noticed they are putting up a 5 or 6 foot high chain link fence around their FRONT yard.  The poles are used and rusty and 5 or 6 feet is just too high for a front yard fence, not to mention that it's chain link.  Any ideas on how to approach this?  I suspect they are new to  Wrightwood so I don't want the posse demanding they tear down their fence, but why does anyone need a chain link fence that tall in their front yard? The back yard is fenceable.  Any help would be appreciated.

There are SB County requirements for fence heights on residential properties. I believe front yards are 4' maximum unless they get a variance.

Yep, time to bake cookies and talk fences.  I believe the max for a front yard is 4' as Wrightwood said.  Max for a side/back yard is 6'.  I just researched this because I'm so tired of looking at my neighbors junk I would have LOVED to put in a higher fence.  But alas.....

The County Building Code is online here:

http://www.co.san-bernardino.ca.us/landuseservices/devcode/806-Planning%20Areas%20and%20Specific%20Plans.pdf

On page 6-79, it states:

(5) Open fences not to exceed four (4) feet in height shall be
permitted within a required front yard area. For purposes of this
section an open fence shall mean those types that are
composed of wire mesh or wrought iron capable of admitting at
least 90 percent of light.

(6) Solid fences and walls not to exceed six (6) feet in height shall be permitted along side and rear property lines except that no solid fence or wall exceeding three (3) feet in height shall be
located within any required front yard area.

(7) Open fences as defined in subsection (5) above that are over six (6) feet in height may be located in the rear half of the lot subject to a finding by the reviewing agency that such a fence will not constitute a nuisance to abutting property owners. Such fences up to sixteen (16) feet in height located within the buildable rear yard area of a lot and not less than ten (10) feet from any property line are exempt from the requirement.

My read is that Open (i.e. chain link) fences 4 ft or lower are per code, otherwise a varience is needed.

Not to mention what a terrible eye sore it is. Makes you wonder when the cars on blocks and used appliances  are coming......

We were thinking of putting chain link in the back yard but didn't like the looks of it.

My Mom had a heart attack, a couple of big surgeries and is still recovering but doing a LOT better.  Haven't been up to WW in 2011 yet.  I think my cabin is still there.  Things are clearing up now and I hope to be up soon!

I am serious about the fencing rules.  What are they?

Welcome back and best wishes to your Mom's speedy recovery.

I looked it up and it appears SBC and LAC follow the same set back codes for residentual fence height and distance codes. Here's a link to the SBC page. It should take you directly to the fence set back page. If not, it was easy to locate.

My favorite part on the fence in question is the rebar sticking out of the top.

That has got to be the ugliest, sloppiest masonry job I've ever seen.  Its purpose escapes me, and it's such an eyesore that I can't even believe the motel owners would want that on their property.  (If in fact it is indeed on their property.)   :P

I see there's some "chain link" bashing going on here and, believe me, I'm not a fan either.  But, I've been looking around a lot in WW and it seems to me that you HAVE to have chain link - at least, for fences running east/west because of all the drainage and water that rushes downhill.  A solid fence would cause a serious problem.

I've also notice a lot of people who have large side yards have the chain link going all along the side and up around what you'd call the front.  I figured that this was to keep the snow players out.

Am I wrong on all of this?
