Boundary Ridge Project
« on: Jun 01, 06, 03:00:46 PM »
The 145-acre project is designed to respond to hazard fuels and forest health concerns around the Community of Wrightwood, California.

The Boundary Ridge Project proposes to reduce wildland fire risk and improve forest health by removing dead and dying trees, thinning overstocked stands, reducing chaparral/shrubs, and creating fuel breaks.

So what is the best estimate for when we begin hearing helicopters over our Mountain?

The Boundary Ridge Project will reduce the risk of wildfire and improve forest health at the top of Lone Pine Canyon.

145 acres of land will have dead and dying trees removed, thin the thick stands of trees and reduce the chaparral/shrubs.

The area is from Circle Mountain (just above Helicopter Hill) towards Wright Mountain.

Briefly, the forest in the area in question is far too dense.  I believe there are about 140 trees per acre.  That is unhealthy for the forest and it could be a VERY serious fire danger should a fire hit that area.  Also with all these trees fighting for water, they get weak and are more easily affected by drought and beetles.  Again, not good if a fire were to hit.

A healthy forest is about 40 trees per acre.  Under the proposal, I believe they will be thinning the forest to about 90 trees per acre as well as removing all the dead wood.

This is something that the Fire Safety Council has worked very hard on.  I also believe that their efforts have provided for this work to extend down the mountain beyond Forest Land and into Private land, as nobody would have the funds to clean out the dead trees etc.

I'm sure Wrightwood, Artology, Boston Bob, Chuck, Justagilio and other can give much more accurate information.

Thanks to the Wrightwood Fire Safety Council for all their hard work in this regard.   :2thumbsup:

145 acres or is it 162....the number I saw last night at the IEFSC meeting was 162 acres. Also when I add the acres in the legend on the documents provided, I come up with 162.

I just added up the acreage shown on the current maps and it does add up to 162 acres. The 145 acres is quoted from the proposed plan and may have been changed.

I've requested current documentation from District Ranger Gabe Garcia.

Yes Justagiglio, that was the number I saw and that is the total you get if you add up the acres in the legend above, to the right of the Vicinity Area Map.

See, I told you they'd have more accurate information.   ;D

The trees per acre is even worse than I thought!  This project will go along way in protecting our forest AND Wrightwood from fire in the future.
