Expect more wildlife visiting town in search of food and water during this record setting dry spell.

This little bobcat was up a tree in a residential neighborhood this afternoon. (Near Virginia & Twin Lakes)

What a beautiful animal, but WOW, so close to home.

At Mountaineer Days this weekend, I "adopted" a big rescue cat (I thought it was a bobcat, but I guess she is a cervil or something, don't know the difference, Nolena does, will have to ask her again). Whatever, this animal is so beautiful, and I feel so happy about being able to contribute to her well-being.

Those are just absolutely incredible photos! It is so sad that it is so dry!! Those animals are lucky the water is there for them!

Love the guzzler photos!

I have a dumb question. What is it about the guzzler that would attract the animals? It seems to be such a small source of water. Does the guzzler give off a trickling noise to attract the animals?

Actually, there are a number of things why animals are attracted to the guzzler. Yes it does have a trickling noise, plus some animals, such as cats, can actually smell water from quite a ways off, and lastly, water is a scarce commodity this year and Mother Nature makes sure that her animals kick their survival skills into high gear.

We have the original smaller guzzler on our front porch and the sound of the water can be heard at least 100 feet away (by humans ears). I'm sure wildlife can hear it from much further distances.

The water is circulated by small (low power consumption) fountain pumps and serves 3 purposes.
- circulating water does not provide mosquito breeding
- sound of water flowing attracts wildlife
- having moving water lowers the freezing point substantially during winter conditions

One more quick point - the guzzler is kept full by a 55 gallon drum located about 30 feet away and is fed by gravity to the guzzler.

Let's hope (for the sake of the rabbit) that the owl and rabbit don't show up at the guzzler at the same time. We all know what can happen.

Thanks, Wrightwood, for sharing the pics of animals at the guzzler. I've never seen such a variety of critters there, in such a short time frame. Guess they are all desperate for water, and how wonderful of you to provide it for them!

And Chuck, I don't recall (in over 30 years), ever seeing an elephant in WW before! Just goes to show how serious the dry year is!!

Oh, poor thing. I know the feeling. I'm a native San Franciscan and can't stand this dry weather. Even when we have hot days in San Francisco, we had the blessed fog to cool us off and give us moisture at night. Oh, to watch fog rolling in over the bay again. Can you all tell I'm homesick?

Thanks for the pictures Wrightwood. I'm still waiting for Big Foot to show up at the guzzler.
