Many of the cedars in town (looking a lot like a sequoia) are dead or dying

I always thought they looked like Thuja (western red cedar = Thuja plicata) because of the shape, but didn't know how to identify them via branches, etc. That would make more sense to me - I suppose there must be sequoia distributors out there, but Thuja's are sold in bazillions of "catalog" nurseries all over the U.S., primarily for windbreaks.

In Googling "western red cedar drought dying" there were many articles about drought killing cedar trees/hedges. Here is a typical comment:
"Water Stress: Cedars are relatively shallow-rooted trees. They are susceptible to drought stress especially on well-drained, sandy soils. The extreme of very wet conditions in the fall and winter, followed by a hot, dry summer, is very stressful for the roots. "

I'm off the hill, but for someone who has one here's a link that might be fun to try, I did my best guesses and found Sequoia and western red cedar to be solutions depending on the answers that I gave:

The SCE Bark Beetle Tree Program makes regular inspections in Wrightwood and schedules contractors. Their inspector (Rocky) can be reached at 951 236-2407.

In regards to dead/dying trees along Hwy 2, those will be addressed by Calfire crews.
If anyone would like to make sure that a dead/dying tree is reported they can call Wrightwood Fire Station 14 at (760) 249-3206 as they are keeping a list that will be turned over to Calfire.

SCE and Calfire Tree crews are extremely busy trying to address the large number of drought stressed and bark beetle trees. Do not expect them to get to every dead tree right away.

Wrightwood, Do you have a contact number for Edison regarding cutting down pine trees near the electric lines? I have 1 possibly 2 that may need to be cut down or at least looked at by Edison. Do I just call the number on my bill for Edison?  Thanks for your help!

Just had Wayne the chimney sweep remove 2 dead trees.  He did an awesome job!  He is clearly someone who is very committed to providing a quality service.  I strongly recommend using Wayne.

Just a warning.

The license number on the junk mail being left by "Michael's Tree Service" shows that their license is expired.

Springtime is Tree Maintenance Time

Ben Balderrama has been doing tree and bush maintenance in Wrightwood for many years. He had a medical issue that tried to take him out last year but he's up and about now and excited about working again.

Ben would be happy to come over to give an estimate on trimming/cutting/pruning jobs (altho he's not climbing tall trees anymore.)

He can also advise on the health of your tree and how to insure that it can protect itself from local birds and insects, bacteria or fungus, and other forces which can damage or kill the tree.

Please call Ben at 760-792-5052 to schedule an appointment.

These guys were passing out flyers again in town today.  Contrary to their flyer and business card, they ARE NOT licensed.

Thank you SpeedRacer
It would only take 1 serious accident and the home owner could be held liable for injury or death if you don't hire state-licensed contractors.

What You Should Know Before Hiring a Contractor
http://www.cslb.ca.gov/Resources/GuidesAndPublications/WYSKPamphlet.pdf

Unlicensed operators are required to include in their advertisements that they are not state licensed and can only perform work valued at less than $500.

Only hire state-licensed contractors.

Any contractor performing work of $500 or more (combined labor and material costs) must be licensed by CSLB to work in California.

D-49 Tree Service
A tree service contractor prunes trees, removes trees, limbs or stumps (including grinding) and engages in tree or limb guying.

I am having a bit of a tree emergency for a number of my trees. We've had irrigation breaks which is likely the cause of this. They are fixed. But, some serious damage has been done.

I have a call into Wrightwood Arbor Tree Service. Anybody use them? I found their ad in the Lion's directory. I also note a good recommendation for Ben Balderrama in this thread. I have some high up trees to deal with. So, I'm not sure about Ben. All recommendations are appreciated. cheryl o7o

I know Mark with WATS and have had him do work for me. I like him and would call him again when needed. Mark and Ben used to work together but I don't think Ben is doing any high work right now. Hope that helps.

If you received a flyer in your door from Michael's Tree Service BEWARE! Their License is EXPIRED and has been EXPIRED since 2002. Do not use these guys! They need to be reported to the Contractors State License Board.

It's time again for some tree and weed maintenance.  Upthread Ben Balderama was recommended. Does anyone have any other recommendations - in particular for weed clearance? Thanks.

Hello everybody, I need a tree cut down. It's about 100' high.  Because it's close to the house, my fire insurance company told me they won't renew me unless I cut it down.  Anyone else get this kind of a mandate? Has anybody here had a tree removed recently and had a good experience with the person(s) who provided the service? I could use a good recommendation.  Thanks in advance.

You could also consider changing your homeowner's insurance.  I've used Mark Helton at Wrightwood Arbor. You can likely find his number by searching his name here. He's great.  I've also used Jose Monkeys Tree 909 461 9501. He's also great. Jose also does lot clearance brush, needles, etc.

Thanks, Wrightwood, for reminding us of that danger.  I checked the contractors' license website for Mark Helton and couldn't find him there.  Anyone know if he's licensed under another name?

I also checked for Wrightwood Arbor and they're not listed.  bTW, what is the difference between having your contractor's license "expired" vs. "cancelled"?  I noticed that Wrightwood Plumbing has theirs "cancelled."  That was a bit of a shock.

Mark is in the Lion's Directory.  If he isn't- he may no longer be in WW.  Someone in this group will likely know.
