I'm just glad Section 5 will soon happen.  I'm tired of feeling envy, it's a corrosive emotion ?

It's pretty awesome to walk through the neighborhood and actually see progress.

Whoo Hoo!  Install went great . . . they showed up a little early, were fast, courteous and put the ONT in the closet as we asked. Here are the results on my MSi laptop using our Asus Gb router.

Thanks UIA! You've been great even in light of a bunch of frustrated residents like myself with foot in mouth disease. Looking forward to the relationship.

We tested the speed using Gigabit wired LAN (CAT 5e). Wi-fi speed was slower, even though the Asus Router is AC 1900 (600 + 1,300) rated and MSI Laptop also has AC wi-fi network. It just shows some of the limits of our home network, as we go faster and faster. I found some of the patch cables, that connect laptops to LAN Gigabit Switch to be CAT 5 only, so I ordered a few CAT 6 cables today. I hope this helps.

Even at the 700+ mpbs, that's light years ahead of anything Frontier would ever offer... I'm also guessing Spectrum can't match those speeds.

The point of this kind of connection is to stop having to worry about the speeds.  The bandwidth gets used to the best of the network's ability to shift data in your direction when you want it.

No problem at all, honestly we have to perform. We are happy to finally get it in!

The current state of WiFi means it will always be slower than wired. There are many tricks from the manufacturers whereby they try to multiplex frequencies and try to go for as wide as a channel as possible allowed by law.. still they are trying to get around technical issues that result from regulation (necessary regulation).. wherein with wired there are no such restrictions and it works much better. But you can't beat the convenience  of WiFi and it works pretty well when you have good coverage.

You will not see a difference between Cat5 and Cat6.. the number designations mean that Cat6 has a tighter twist on the wires inside the cable... it's only purpose is to provide for a more balanced inductance level between the wires.. so unless you have your Cat 5 wire going around some kind of major electrical interference source you will not see a difference at all between Cat5e and Cat6. You could detect this kind of interference on a managed switch and see a bunch of CRC errors for example.. but I will tell you this is an extremely rare occurrence. Both are good choices, one is just more expensive then the other.

--Wes

Spectrum can't match those speeds with the current technology they are deploying in Wrightwood. They are using a hybrid system that runs fiber to a node and then distributing to homes using coax cable. Coax is limited, especially on the upload. Slow uploads also has the negative side affect of causing DSL like ping times. 25 to 50 ms ping times instead of 5 to 8 ms ping times on Fiber. This means that packets going back and forth are slower.. not a big deal surfing websites, but can make a big difference in gaming. You might notice a difference also if you have a home office and using a VPN to connect to Headquarters. Lots of back and forth packets and longer round trips for those packets can add up..

The application and experience are what count. If 100 Mbps down and 8 to 10 Mbps on the upload feels ok and seem to work then that's what matters. As a Wrightwood resident myself I'm happy that everyone has a choice. If UIA does a terrible job or somehow lets you down you have a choice.

Wes,

Thank You...I had your service installed in July and could not be happier!!

I had some slower speeds in the beginning, however, after replacing my router, the speeds have been great!

I generally get between 700 and 800mbps with a ping time between 0 and 5...no more buffering!!   I can have both computers streaming and even the tv on with netflix...thank you!!

For those of you still waiting...Its worth the wait....these guys are true professionals and take great care during the install...

Thanks again Wes!

I got a call this morning from UIA saying that due to a cancellation, they had an opening to install at my house today. Woo hoo! Yes, of course I'd be interested.

And luckily, it happened to be a day I was off work and at home to get the call.

The team arrived and got to work soon after. Everybody was very courteous, hard working, and even answered a few questions from my kids.

I can also now verify that my own computers are the slowest link in the system.

When we hooked up the first computer, a purposely low-spec (but very quiet) Home Theater PC next to the living room TV, connected via ethernet, it didn't get much above 120 Mbps.  Oh darn! Only 20x faster than my best days on Frontier's DSL!  The tech explained that it is probably because it is a lower spec / older computer.  Thinking about it now, it might also be the 20-foot long semi-questionable cable I'm using to connect this particular computer to the wall jack...so I'll have to inspect that.

But, anyway, on to a slightly newer laptop...connected to a wall jack with a short cat6 ethernet cable...and BAM, around 500 Mbps up and down.

Both computers showed pings of 10ms or less too.

Later in the day, I tried another speed test on that first computer in the living room, and it's up at 300+ Mbps. Possibly it had something going on in the background earlier?  Either way...even the original 120 Mbps is more than I know what to do with. And I've got high confidence that if I got a newer machine in my house, it would be showing speeds even faster than the documented 500 Mbps.

Overall, everybody I've had contact with at UIA has been great in every way.

Thanks Wes!
Thanks to all the people I worked with from UIA today (on the phone and in person)!
And Thanks to all the others on the UIA team that made this happen!

We are in section 4 (the underground utility part of it) and have been patiently waiting while paying big bucks for Verizon wifi since we moved here over 2 years ago. Any update on when our infrastructure is going in? Or are we going to be dead last after the rest of WW gets done?

Fire Scout: if there was a snarky, whiny email contest yours would be a strong contender.  You'll get it when you get it.  If that outrages you, vote with your wallet and stay with the competition.  Patiently waiting...for 2 entire years!  Hmmm, where did I put that box of medals...

It's true, we are late on the underground over there. We are working on a schedule. I won't lie, it is a challenge and hate the idea of beating up my horizontal drill in the Wrightwood rock but we have committed to it, so we will do it. We will try to beat the Winter.. The drill is busy right now in Helendale completing some sections that have been waiting same as you guys. Sorry about the wait.
