I got a call this morning from UIA saying that due to a cancellation, they had an opening to install at my house today. Woo hoo! Yes, of course I'd be interested.
And luckily, it happened to be a day I was off work and at home to get the call.
The team arrived and got to work soon after. Everybody was very courteous, hard working, and even answered a few questions from my kids.
I can also now verify that my own computers are the slowest link in the system.
When we hooked up the first computer, a purposely low-spec (but very quiet) Home Theater PC next to the living room TV, connected via ethernet, it didn't get much above 120 Mbps. Oh darn! Only 20x faster than my best days on Frontier's DSL! The tech explained that it is probably because it is a lower spec / older computer. Thinking about it now, it might also be the 20-foot long semi-questionable cable I'm using to connect this particular computer to the wall jack...so I'll have to inspect that.
But, anyway, on to a slightly newer laptop...connected to a wall jack with a short cat6 ethernet cable...and BAM, around 500 Mbps up and down.
Both computers showed pings of 10ms or less too.
Later in the day, I tried another speed test on that first computer in the living room, and it's up at 300+ Mbps. Possibly it had something going on in the background earlier? Either way...even the original 120 Mbps is more than I know what to do with. And I've got high confidence that if I got a newer machine in my house, it would be showing speeds even faster than the documented 500 Mbps.
Overall, everybody I've had contact with at UIA has been great in every way.
Thanks Wes!
Thanks to all the people I worked with from UIA today (on the phone and in person)!
And Thanks to all the others on the UIA team that made this happen!
