Was the cat on the roof? I walked by the house where the nest is, with my little dog, about 6 pm, looked up and didn't see any little faces like I did a few days prior. Just checked the live cam and all the kids are ok. These baby birds are so precious!

Ah ha that was you! I sent you a PM about this. No the cat was just stalking around the front of the house. The parents were well aware of his presence and were starting to raise a ruckus.

They're all piled up sleeping now. I saw them flapping their wings yesterday morning and it was pretty entertaining! So, once they leave the nest, do they ever come back to it or are they gone for good?

They are getting so big!! They barely fit in that little nest-- mom and dad may need to add a room to their house if the babies dont take off soon!!

Here's a question I don't think has been addressed yet. Any time of the day or night, we are able to view the nest via the cam. Is the light built into the camera, or is there actually a light on the nest at night? Seems like that would interfere with the birds' circadian rhythms, assuming they have them, like we do. Just curious.

The camera is designed for day and night vision use.
During the night small infrared leds provide invisible light that the shows up in black and white images. During daylight hours the camera switches to color mode but due to the shadow under the eves not much color is noticed.

In fact the leds provided so much invisible light during the night I used some blue masking tape to block most of the light.

This same style of camera is being used in two different woodpecker houses that are now installed in 2 separate Wrightwood locations and waiting for families of birds to move in full time.

Thanks, RobertW and Wrightwood. This is so fascinating! I'm sure going to be sorry to see our "kids" fly the coop, but it will be just as much fun watching the woodpeckers. Interesting how different the housing is between jays and woodpeckers.

Don't know on that one. The same spot has had numerous nests and during heavy winds the nests seem to blow apart.

The wood beam does have a coil of wire that I had put up there a few years back for a security camera and the nests have all been built within the coiled up wire.

It would just be horrible if the nest blew apart while there were tiny babies in it. Oh dear, now I have something additional to worry about!!
