Went and hiked out to Eaton Canyon Falls.. saw an animal I had never seen before! Did some research, found out it was a Ring-tailed Cat! Very cool! I was super excited! Very agile, running and jumping through the trees and along the canyon walls.

There is a very pretty bobcat hanging out in the Community Garden area (not inside the fence).  :)
Probably should watch those cats and small dogs.

I hope that it eats gophers.

Thanks Nolena!  I looked up bobcats and the National Geographic site as well as defenders.org has some great photos of them.  The bobcat fur and ears are beautiful.  The sites say bobcats prefer rabbits or hares for dinner - but also sometimes dine on rodents, birds, bats and in winter months adult deer.  They usually have one primary den in a rocky or cave area but also have auxiliary dens in wood piles and brushy areas.  At one time bobcats were legally protected and I think still are protected so they will not become extinct.

I didn't know bobcats could take down adult deer, interesting. They sure are beautiful.

If you live in the area, now is the time to spread condiments around the gopher holes.

Not always enemies (when well fed)

Our first bobcat sighting yesterday morning around 6am.. right across the street from me on Green Road in PH. I've never heard about or seen one this low before. Tho, I have seen them in the early a.m. over in the West Cajon running across the 138.

A very vocal family of coyotes were on the prowl between 12:30 and 1 am this morning in area of pine and oriole - have not heard coyotes for a long time in this area.  They have a very interesting communication system amongst themelves.  Did anyone else hear them?

Our experience over here off Desert Front is they raise a ruckus like that when they have had a successful kill.
There may be other reasons, but I am certain about this circumstance. It's good news and bad news situation.

I received reports today from a resident who lives on Cardinal Street that a Mountain Lion was recently spotted in the Flume Canyon Wash.  It appears that several people on Cardinal Street and Lark (Across the wash) have seen the big cat.  One sighting put it near Hwy 2 and Cardinal last night about 6:00 PM.

My husband was driving home about 11 pm on Tuesday and said a very large mountain lion passed in front of his car at the area just below the levels.  He said it was very large, very muscular, and at  least 150 lbs.  Probably the same one that has been seen in the wash up by Cardinal.

The "levels" area is the relatively flat, wide area just below Wright Mountain Road.

Walking the dogs on Heath Creek wash today, saw fresh mountain lion tracks in the snow.

Thanks for explaining the "levels"!

I just noticed a few days ago, walking up the Heath Creek wash, that someone has goats now -- four of them at least.  I was wondering if that would attract mountain lions and was hoping not.  Reminded me of that scene in Jurassic Park where they leave the goat out for the t-rex.  Chum.

Hi Tim, that property has had goats on it for at least 2 years and maybe 3. My dog and I walk past several days a week to say "Hi."
