were up at the top (west side) on the edge of the forest and its pretty awesome seeing one of these guys face to face during the day (from my second story balcony), but no matter how docile they seem, I would never get anywhere near them and I would never encourage one to hang around..(I keep the dog food inside...

Last time a bear was in the neighborhood I used a whistle I have on my keyring and it did the job - he didn't like it.
