6:00 pm Wed 9-4-02 the US Forest Service, So Cal Interagency Incident Management Team 3 reports that the fire was 554 acres in size and 100% contained.

The fire had 8 minor injuries with a total estimated cost of $2,700,000. On Fri 8-30-02 a helicopter had a hydraulic failure and crashed. The pilot was not injured. The fire remains in the Stockton Flats & Coldwater Canyon area. Helicopters used Mt. High East reservoir as a refill source during the beginning stages of the fire. Wrightwood residents will continue having smoke in the air and hear aircraft during daylight hours. At the present time there is  "No threat to Wrightwood."

Date-Time and Location At 5:23pm on 8-29-02 a fire broke out in Lytle Creek Canyon, San Bernardino
National Forest, approximately 4 miles southwest of Wrightwood California. The fire quickly grew from 5 acres to 25 acres in a half an hour period. The forest service began calling in numerous aircraft to stop the fast moving fire. The fire is located approximately south of the gun range, on the south side of Lytle Creek and moving in a southerly direction towards Telegraph Peak & Mt Baldy.

Road Status Lytle Creek Road [3N06] is closed approximately 4 miles north of Lytle Creek Ranger Station. The shooting area near Lytle Creek is accessible.
Threats or concerns Extremely high temperatures, steep terrain, poor access, and strong gusty winds. Wrightwood & surrounding areas residents will continue having smoke, ash and debris in the air and hear aircraft during daylight hours.  [smoke, ash and debris reported in Big Bear, Barstow, Victorville, and surrounding high desert communities.]
Weather Partly cloudy with slight chance of thunderstorms, high temperature of 90-105,
humidity 10%, winds from the west/northwest 3-15 mph. Smoke will continue drifting over the town of Wrightwood.

On 8-29-02 while the 12 photos below were being taken the Wrightwood Fire Department had their brush engine on Lone Pine Canyon to monitor falling ash. Falling ash and partially burnt leaves were landing on the ground but had cooled before hitting the ground.
