I came across this (one year old) article: Fiber to the home subsidies approved for two California communities http://www.tellusventure.com/blog/fiber-to-the-home-subsidies-approved-for-two-california-communities/
"Since the initial draft of this resolution, UIA has entered into an agreement with Charter Communications to lease an additional 1 Gbps fiber line into the Wrightwood community in order to supplement the microwave backhaul. The fiber line will provide additional bandwidth and redundancy to the project and will not affect total project costs for the purposes of this resolution."

Hi Everyone,

As far as we know Charter is going to put Internet over their coax cable, which is not fiber.  And anyway, we are ok with competition.  As far as an update, we are at the very last approval for installation, the squirrel proof fiber is in for the ENTIRE town.  We ordered it all at once because there is a nation-wide fiber shortage.  But not for US.  The equipment has been arriving daily, and we are ready to roll with our subcontractor.  I'm not ready to release the sections yet, but we will do that soon.  Just need the boss to give me the ok on that one.  This has been a 2 year long process and we are so ready to be actually installing soon.

Thanks for the updates and keep 'em coming!  I travel constantly and this forum is the only way to keep in touch and up to date.  I would really hate to miss out on fiber to my house if I'm away!!!

Oh boy it's getting close, they updated http://wrightwood.net !!

Edit: Well they did updated it, now it's showing a blank page lol, was a tan and brown layout that talked about $70 a month and what not. Maybe I got a sneak peak I was not supposed to see lol.

I'd say they are working on webpage updates right now and that's why the website is intermittent.

Ya I got back in too, this is interesting.

"When will I have access?

We are working as quickly as we can to get Fiber internet to everyone. The town will be divided into 5 parts. Click on the Activation Schedule to see when your section will be active."

Link doesn't work, but I am excited to see what their plans are when it does.

Either UIA is being extremely modest or trying to manage early expectations in case there are growing pains early on by saying the speed is "10-20 times faster than local DSL."  1Gbps should be at least 100 times faster than anything anybody in Wrightwood has.  I don't think Verizon/Frontier/DSLExtreme offers anything faster than 10Mbps (3Mbps on the far edges of town) and there are 1024Mb in 1Gb.  I can't express how excited I am to get rid of my super slow DSL.

I've read that with gigabit, the bottleneck is often at the other end of the connection. Not all websites are willing to dish out data that fast. Maybe that's why UIA is being modest? Perhaps Google and their properties will give us the full firehose.

Yup that's very true, for example my iPhone 6s can only handle 280 Mbps, so if I have 1000 Mbps or 10000 Mbps it doesn't really matter, I'll be maxed out. Most devices will be are bottleneck, not just the sites. I can't wait to have that problem lol

Good points!  I've got an AC router (which is the other requirement to utilize the 1Gbps speeds for your home's wifi network) so I'm all set to make the most of the new connection whenever it becomes available in my neighborhood.  :)

I tried to sign up for updates but keep getting the dreaded "404 page not found".  When I click on other sections I get "site can't be reached.  Wrightwood.net took to long to respond".  I am hopeful for this fiber but remain slightly skeptical due to their website not working.  Fingers crossed that the issue of not being able to access tabs on their website is on my end, not theirs.

Whew!  That was what I was hoping to hear!    Thanks.
I am still having issues accessing some parts of their website as it times out or webpage cannot be reached and of course the dreaded 404 error.  But I will keep trying...

Sometimes that problem is caused by using certain browsers, particularly Safari on an iPhone or Internet Explorer.  Chrome is a pretty safe bet these days.
