Just curious, is that speed at your router or on a device that is on wifi?

Yup, it was a problem on our end. I was at work and the family was having issues and sent me the speed test results.  But it turned out to just be an issue with the computer they were using.

    Thank you for the replies/suggestions.

Is there anybody from UIA that can provide a status update on getting service restored? All I know is that the fire burned right through a good portion of the backhaul run as it runs out of town.

Oh jeeze, that's not good. Satellite imagery shows the lines coming into town go straight through the burn area. I bet most of that run is a total loss for all of the carriers.

    From UIA:

    Dear Valued Customer,

The Sheep Creek fire in Wrightwood has burned the poles that carry all internet communications including fiber and copper to Wrightwood. Since the fire is still active, the local authorities are not allowing repairs to the poles. Once the fire is contained and they let the repair crews work on the poles, the repairs will take approximately 2-3 days. At this time we are estimating the internet will be down until Monday, June 20th. We will send updates as we receive them.

    Thank You.

    Mountain Hardware

    UIA is the GREATEST.
We normally have a radio signal from Uia for our internet. So they (Wes) pulled a Magic trick and we are back up operating as normal and taking ALL credit cards.
This is exactly why we support a LOCAL Company.
    UIA all the way
    Thanks
    Mike

UIA really is such an awesome ISP. So glad we have them as it truly completes the magic experience of living here. Thanks Wes and the team!

Before I retired, I ran a small hosting company/ISP, and had a lot of upstream providers and commercial internet connections.  Some of my providers were very good, and some, well, not great.

The best was a company called Level3.  Their service was awesome.  I had guaranteed 100% bandwidth, and guaranteed low latency.

My residential connection from UIA is better.  Their support is amazing.  I don't have the guarantees, but that would cost a lot more.

L3 turned into Lumen now. Still a great Tier 1 provider. I think part of UIA's magic is that they peer through Any2, and getting there is only 2 added hops. Plus having the redundant routing through frontier's network really is premium service.

I've been a student of outages for several decades and you can learn a ton when things break.

I would argue that having redundant fiber through two different telecoms falls flat when both circuits are close together, and both melt about the same time.

That's not being critical of UIA at all -- I'm not happy with the accountants at Spectrum and Frontier who demand the cheapest route possible.

It appears the State may install fiber (underground?) on Highway 2 https://middle-mile-broadband-initiative.cdt.ca.gov/

I don't see anything for the 138 or 2 area. Makes sense why there wouldn't be though since this whole area is already swarming with fiber.

1up for having unique fiber paths out of town. Having redundancy even if the lines are together is great for many reasons, but it ultimately still falls weak to things like what happened in the fire. I guess all I can say is that on the bright side it's unlikely to have another fire come close to that span any time soon.
