Oh man, that doesn't look good. I thought I heard they had a bunch of defensible space, but when I saw pics on the news tonight it really didn't look like it at all. Hope they can save it.
The same thing happened in the Station fire.  It's very steep on the north side of the ridge, so they had to let the fire come right up to them, then stop it.  I recall it being described as very risky.  There were burned trees on the observatory grounds.

Also, if you drew a line from Cooper Canyon to Juniper Hills it wouldn't pass thru the Station fire burn area.  It did, however, burn just west of that line.  Everything north and northwest hasn't burned in modern times.

Thanks for the link for the map, Cheryl. The fire does not seem very far away as the crow flies. And, thanks, as always, to John and everyone for keeping us up to date and as safe as possible. sagespirit

The map I posted from the LA Times. back a couple of messages, does show heat spots pretty close to Juniper Hills and the Devils Punchbowl area.  This map from ncwg does not show that. This map was updated since this morning but I can't figure out how to tell how recently.  This map also lets you measure 'crow fly' distance between a hot spot and another location.  Does anyone know how often this is updated?

I'm a little leery of some of the data on the LA Times map.  You'll notice that there is a large, diffuse, rectangular grid within the data points that I suspect reflects a lack of resolution.  I'm more willing to believe the clustered data points.

When I flick between GOES IR information and Google maps the GOES data places a large "hot" block right where that rectangular grid is.  That's a resolution issue.

Thanks Joe.  What did you just say?  Hah.  We were wondering how you could have a grid like that.

This is the map from that link Wrightwood put up earlier.  It's closer to the ncwg map than the LAT map and it has the Juniper Hills evac on it.

I guess we should call it the Angeles National Burn Scar now.  If we keep repeating these giant fires it's going to be a big economic hit to the region.  Nobody wants to visit a forest of dead trees.

Juniper Hills hasn't burned in the 50 years I've been paying attention. There's a lot of nice old growth in the area.
