It's the Bobcat Fire that is threatening Mt. Wilson Observatory and the seismic station, right?

In any case, it sounds like they're both still there. Is this correct?

I've been following the Bobcat Incident (Azusa)  and the El Dorado Incident (Yucaipa/Forest Falls) for the last several days.  The one I'm more worried about is the Bobcat.  I don't want a nighttime up-canyon run towards the Angeles Crest.

The Bear Incident Northeast of Oroville made a Huge run yesterday, and is now too close to the east side of Oroville.

Stay safe my friends.

Yes, the Bobcat Fire is in the Angeles National Forest

Roughly 50% of the untouched piece of forest gone.  John, do you still happen to have any of those fire history maps you've posted here? I recall one that depicted this area that I'm basing this on.

Not a single aircraft on the Bobcat fire again.  Baffling.

Joe I'll need to look around to see what I can find. This one doesn't cover far enough.

A former fire aviator I watch in Northern California says the planes up there are grounded due to smoke/poor visibility in the fire area.

I have no idea if that's true here, but it'd make sense.

^^^^Perfect!  Thanks very much.  That app says the Gale fire burned in that drainage in '57.  I believe there aerial photo site I was using has a picture from '58 and it shows no fire damage.  I'll check again later.

I find this confusing. yesterday it was windy and it blew away the smoke from the north end of the fire. It was clear there. Yet, they only had one aircraft there which I believe was a Chinook helicopter from Lancaster.  Two, they said that they couldn't fly because of winds, didn't they? I guess I wasn't aware that the conditions under which they fly were so narrow and specific.

I'm watching the NE corner of Bob Cat.  WW has a NE wind through tomorrow night (if I'm reading it right).  The winds in the area of the fire will be S & SW for a period of time today and into tomorrow.  It's moving NE at the moment.  Any comments? thx cheryl o7o

Its obvious this is a choice to let it burn.  So, this may be a forest management choice to let the unburned area burn.  Now that this is a National Monument, I wonder if the same kinds of fire management choices can or should apply.  The issue is that pine trees don't come back after fires.  Go to any of the last 15-years of burn scars and just try to find pine saplings.  I don't spend a lot of time looking, but when I do they are few and far between.  Many times I don't see any.

So, maybe it's time to think about protecting what we have, not managing it by letting it burn only to never come back.

That's LACSD: https://flightaware.com/photos/view/1504754-11d587a3bfc5724e7f69ffbd9c16170ac3d305ce/aircrafttype/AS32

(funny story I told here once, but to rehash, I was at Mt. Wilson and I called and reported seeing smoke a few years ago.  I couldn't see the base of the column of smoke because it was on the other side of a ridge, so I couldn't say precisely where the fire was. I did my best to communicate that to the dispatcher.  I stayed there taking pictures of the sunset and noticed an aircraft flying by down on the valley floor.  Then it turned and started coming up the mountain with a big bright spotlight on.  It pretty much made a bee-line for me, flew over me and then ran up and down the ridge a few times.  I tried to point it in the direction of the smoke, but knew if they didn't see anything by the time reaching me the smoke probably wasn't in the mountains, but rather something on fire in the city below.  It was that same LACSD helicopter.)
