While on Blue Ridge Road this morning, near Mt High, a good size deer went over the side and decided to stop and pose.

Mule Deer have large ears that move constantly and independently, hence they get their name, "Mule" or "Burro Deer."

The deer ears are critical to its survival, and they can easily detect a faint sound, and in a split second determine if danger is present. The ears contain many complex muscles, which allow free movement of the ears with incredible control. The deer's ears can rotate in any direction, allowing the animal to determine the direction of the sound. Hearing is so acute that the deer can detect the time it takes for a sound to reach one ear relative to the other; thus allowing the deer to establish how far away a sound is. If several deer are together, the ears can be a form of communication, and a simple flick of the ears can warn the others of danger.

Here's a good example of how the ears rotate behind the deer: (Compare to photo above)

I saw a deer run by the wash across LPC  last night.  (Near Juniper) My daughter spotted it first.  It is good to see them in town, but careful on the roads.

Oh, I am so jealous! I haven't seen a deer since we moved here 4 years ago. I've seen coyotes and racoons and that's always fun, but no deer. (I would rather not see a bear.)

Want deer in your yard? Plant roses. They love them and the scent will attract them.

That's what you get for living near the hill.  It's interesting that almost every weekend, Animal Control is trying to corral a deer from getting onto the 5 freeway.

In Burbank, there aren't a lot of predators the deer need to worry about and where KRLbach lives the deer are prevalent and roam the Del Bell Golf Course to graze.

While driving to work this morning a large deer (mule deer?) bolted across Hwy 2 right in front of me.  This was at 6:10 AM, about 100 yrds south of Desert Front Road.

I never even saw it come up over the edge of the road.  Beautiful animal, but I'm glad I wasn't 5 seconds earlier...

Peace

I saw a pair of them at this location on the east side of the road a couple weeks ago.  I had to drive back by three or four times so the girls could see them.  They couldn't see them until they moved.

Saw a dear run across LPC about 6:00 pm last night. It was good sized and startled me when it darted across.

Beautiful shot, Fight On!  I love these kinds of "shots" so very much more than the "pow" kind of shots we hear once hunting season opens....   I wish that would be outlawed in our forest.   >:(  Where did you take your picture?

Anyway, I was waaaay up on Blue Ridge with Nolena on Friday morning, we were hoping to see Bighorns, but all we saw were chipmunks and squirrels.

That's very cool that you hike with Nolena! There are some very special sections on the Blue Ridge pct. The trail is so soft, smooth and pretty flat. Shaded too!
I almost walked right into this deer. About 10 feet away! Couldn't get the camera to take a picture fast enough and it ran away. It was near the start of the Mt. Wilson Trail in Sierra Madre. Keep hiking with Nolena!

HaHa, Fight On!  We had parked at Guffy CG, walked the road over to the Heath slide, meandered there a bit, then walked to the Backbone Trailhead, where we sat on a log and had a snack.  Then took the PCT back to Guffy.  It's a pretty nice grade most of that way (about 2.5 miles), but the last little bit is very uphill, and almost did me in (I'm not in good shape right now).  But I made it, this is just baby steps in getting back into shape.

I always love your pics of critters you see on your hikes, down in your area.
