...or a glow-in-the-dark monster emerging from the ground. See the eyes & nose?

I saw this photo op the other night... but my digital camera refused to cooperate.
AND I never knew there was so much traffic on Highway 2 at 8:00 p.m. on a Wednesday night!!!! YUCK! :P

Lots of patience and research goes into locating Nelson Bighorn Sheep.
I can't even begin to tell you what the adrenaline rush is like when looking through the viewfinder of the camera and seeing these speculator animals so close to home.
The Bighorn Sheep photo shown above was taken at Wright Mountain, less than 1.3 miles from Twin Lakes.

Looking up Kingsnake on the web>>
http://www.desertusa.com/magfeb98/feb_pap/du_kingsnake.html
to see if it was poisonous (not) i found this:
"Common Kingsnakes should not be confused with Mountain Kingsnakes, which comprise a separate species (Lompropeltis zonata). The noctural Mexican Kingsnake (Lompropeltis mexicana) has distinct red-brown crossbands or blotches and occurs only in the Chihuahuan Desert." Is this red-brown with crossbands and lost in WW or another type?

Thanks for the informational site. Need to be aware when taking walks with pets.

-
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Very nice! :)
-
Woowwww!
-
So beautiful, thank you!
;D
-
On the topic of the Big Horn Sheep but not really; a mountain goat is not really a goat at all, it's actually a species of antelope.
-
(http://www.wrightwoodcalif.com/nature/tongueview3.jpg)
-
THAT is beautiful!
-
Is the coyote licking his chops after dinner, or panting? Maybe he had a turkey dinner!
-
We watched the coyote cruising around for 10-15 minutes after drinking from the guzzler and didn't notice it find any food so I don't think it was either.
Then again who knows what happened before approaching the guzzler.
-
My thought exactly one Saturday night on the town in Wrightwood. ;D

Where was that taken from? I can see( from right to left starting in the center) Wright Mtn, Pine Mtn, Mt Dawson, then Baldy. Awesome shot.

Where was that taken from? I can see( from right to left starting in the center) Wright Mtn, Pine Mtn, Mt Dawson, then Baldy. Awesome shot.
It was taken from Baldy Mesa Rd in Phelan. The timing was perfect as the window of opportunity only lasted a few minutes. I was tempted to drive another few blocks and would have missed the shot.
Here's a few details:
Taken at 4:59pm 12-30-03
Camera: Canon 10D (Digital SLR)
F-stop: 4.5
ISO: 400
Exposure:1/125
Hand Held
28 mm lens

John,
this is such a great thread!

Have always been fascinated with spider webs and how they catch the sun. Those are some type of white flies in the upper right.
-
That is pretty cool, reminds me of Charlotts Web. :)
-
I have lots of spider webs in my house that you can photograph! ::)
-
Hey Wrightwood, do you have a book or album of your photographs? If you do, I would definitely buy one from you. I enjoy looking at your photos. :2thumbsup:
-
Pretty cool, Bob! :2thumbsup:
Spider webs are particularly beautiful when they catch the sun. :sunny:
-
Vader,
Thank you for the nice comments.
At this time I don't have a book available but it is something that I would like to do in the future.
During the recent Wrightwood ArtTour I did show some of my mounted and framed fine photography and enjoyed meeting and talking with a number of guests.

Holey Guacamole!
Is there a story you'd like to share?
-
I'm a volunteer photographer for the LAFD and LACoFD. This photo was taken last week while riding with LACoFD Engine 33 in Lancaster. They were dispatched along with Quint 33 to a motor home fire. Upon arrival they found a 35 foot Winnebago fully involved. Cause of the fire was electrical and originated in the engine compartment. LACoFD Engine and Squad 33 are the busiest companies in all of LA County with lots of activity. Engine 33 was named 3rd busiest engine company in the nation from a trade publication. Busier than companies in South LA!
Here's one more shot from that incident...
-
Incredible :o
Hope no one was hurt in there!
Do you wear protective suits while you are out there with them? I am guessing that you get pretty close to that stuff. Have you ever been injured or had smoke inhalation or anything?
-
I have protective gear. Lets just Say that I have taken my share of smoke in the past. I try to stay far enough not to get hurst, but sometimes, getting the shot brings me a little closer...
-
What an incredible photo and an honorable job you have!

Very nice, Chuck. You will one more chance this year to capture great snow shots like that when we get this one last storm come through next week.
-
I like that...makes me wnat to walkout there..
-
Sometimes I'm amazed at what can be done with so few resources....At any given time...helicopters are flying in from all directions and whisking the injured off to trauma centers....On this particular call.....those working behind the scenes....our dispatchers, pre-alerted "Mercy Air"...and prompted the first responders....of helicopter availability.....Most of the time, those on the ground or those in the air are the ones in the limelight...but I've got to tell you, we've got some awesome behind the scenes dispatchers in San Bernardino County Fire..

Hey Steve,
Is this the incident that LACoFD E79 responded to today. There was some concern as to what ambulance or air squad was coming. Just wondering?
-
Palmdale Highway (18)...and Sheep Creek...on the 25th...4 car tc...

-
My very first fire....in Lake Arrowhead.....I was running around in my 31x waist pants like a chicken with my head cut off.....spinning like a top....It was quite a right of passage.....2 1/2" hose....radiant heat...no hoods in those days....steel scott bottles....throwing up in the bushes so no one could see me....but I'm sure plenty heard..he he he......and overhaul, overhaul, overhaul. Fond memories....

Not a bad baptism by fire! Looks like the attic was starting to go on the "B" side...
-
These condominiums had vaulted ceilings...and there was some extension into the unit on the left....but we....mostly the other guys...stopped the extension.....it was a great learning experience...anyone wanting shake shingles...should check out the shingles on these condos....

Loma Linda has a new resource...This is a recon command and communications unit....They wouldn't let me drive it!

Cool photos FFS!!!! Thanks for sharing!

Across the street from the ambulance entrance at Arrowhead Reigonal Med. Center is a cemetery. Cemeteries next to hospitals are an odd thing....Too practical...I had just finished a class and was waiting in the cemetery for a helicopter to come in...I wanted to frame a photo of a headstone with a Mercy Air Helicopter in the background...It was not to be...

Hey steve love your photos...but.......it always seems like your yelling at me with your big bold lettered words.

I find big letters easier to read...and don't mean to be a nuisance...anyone else have any input by chance.....My girls made these footprints when they were little......

Very nice shots, Steve. The graveyard is kinda poignant.
The footprints are priceless....Give the photograph to your kids when they grow up..better then that, when the first boys come by to take them out. Nice work.

So if I drive my golf cart a few blocks away from my house to visit my buddy. What kind of reaction will I get from my neighbors? Will I find CHP knocking on my door if im just driving along side the road at about 10mph
-
Nice Cart...
Dosent Hillbilly drive his around town... ???
-
I dont know if he does, I havent had the pleasure of meeting him yet. I recently moved here about 6 weeks ago and by all means I do not want to cause any waves with any of my neighbors. You won't catch me riding my pit bike or quads up and down the street but a good friend of mine is moving to WW and will be about 1 mile from me and with the cost of gas and the fact that im to lazy to walk, I thought about cruising my cart over there but if I might find CHP knocking at my door I guess the old skateboard might have to come out of the garage.

This cart only goes I think 10-15mph max, it is a 4 stroke gas engine but its not nearly as loud as a dirt bike. Its a cruiser for our desert trips. Guess I will use it to cruise over my buddies. I will be cruising slow on the right shoulder and listening to my stereo in it. If I offend anyone while driving it, by all means let me know and I will stop.

Very, very, very nice!

Okay this was taken this morning from our house... but the MOST amazing thing about this is that my husband took it :) I am really proud of him. If he starts to enjoy my love of taking pictures... I just might end up with one of them BADA$$ cameras like Wildman & Wrightwood have :D

How can something SO BIG, filled with so much water, FLOAT in the SKY? Clouds have always blown my mind ever since I was 6, the first time I saw one move across the sky.
That's all for now, it's starting to rain again, (a big deal here in the desert) more later if there is lightning!

laughlinguy,
These are incredible photos! Thank you for sharing them with us!

What do you mean by you got lucky? ;D
Great shot though!

To be there for this picture...
Shortly after, the winds increased and blew the column over...
Photography is that way....have to be in the rith place at the right time....
Best wishes.....Steve

I hope Wrightwood doesn't mind these postings on his topic...
I'm guessing it's an open topic for "Photo of the Day"...

Did you just happen upon this guy at the beach?
no, it was in the ocean, I was snorkeling... and found the conch..I wanted to bring it home, so put it on the boat overnight....
in the morning, it started to try to come out of the shell!!
We plopped him back in the ocean.
-
Awesome photos FirefighterSteve. What program do you use to put the frames around the photos??
-
Hi Forest 1...
I use adobe photoshop......7....
I have a short tutorial I could email if you have adobe,,,
It's easy...
Best wishes...
-
(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d198/redphox/solarcopya.jpg)
How did you do that? It reminds me of the liner pics of Rush's album "Moving Pictures!"
Sweet Job!
-
Hi Laughlinguy....
The concept is to have motion in a slow shutter speed.....
But...
With stops...
The stops....in this particular photo is at the end of the movement....
add clarity and definition...in the blurr......
I used adobe's extraction tool and painting to do the background in black....
Thanks for your interest in my photos and all your kind comments....
Steve...

Whatever,
Great photos!!!! Please keep posting!!! :2thumbsup:
-
Thanks for the compliments guys. The pic of the snowy joshua trees was taken with my old Canon AE-1. All of the others were taken with my digital camera which is a Kodak DX 6490 4mp with 10x optical zoom and 3x digital zoom. The digital cameras are cool, but man I miss my AE-1 sometimes. All the photos were taken here locally in Tri-Community. Here are a few more.

This one's a little blurry but I always feel lucky to get lightning at all.

Shooting pictures of lightning
I haven't been around that much lightning. Is there a technique or is it just luck being at the right place at the right time? I know with the new cameras like the 20D etc. speed is not an issue, but timing and luck appears very important.
-
Nice shots! :)
Whatever. ;D (Can't resist playing with that name.)
-
"Alright now that I know how to post pics, be prepared to be subjected to my photos that I think are cool but probably really aren't."
Great stuff.....Whatever :2thumbsup:. The sunsets are great with the ball of fire sinking into the earth. Lightning has escaped me and is difficult to capture. Welcome.
-
Lightning....as far as my experience is all about luck and taking a ton of pictures of black sky and hoping to time it right. I have had success by trying to time out how often the lightning is striking and taking bursts of pictures by holding down the shutter button.
Wildman, I have spent the last couple hours looking at your photos and I am feeling so inspired right now. Truly, truly amazing stuff. You obviously have a great eye, but also what a great camera you have. I'm jealous.

Maximum strength of 53,000 pounds per square inch of spreading force at the tips, at twenty four inches open...
A crew that's on their game should be able to force all the doors, push the seats back, and roll the dash in about eight minutes....with this one tool....

When I first used the Hurst I was utterly surprised. It's all at the push of a button. Absolutely no work is involved in tearing cars apart (except holding the dang thing up). It's soooooooo cool! You make me miss firefighting. :'( Someday....when the kids are older (concidering one is still in the oven that will be a few years), DH and I are going to go back to volunteering. I so totally and utterly miss it.
Oh...and VERY COOL picture firefightersteve!!!!!!

Here's my most recent photo...

Nice..... ;D

The moon did have a nice tone to it that night. I was too tired from digging to drag the stuff out again that night, but this is from the night before. I found that thing moves fast.... :o a slow shutter speed actually blurs it quite a bit.
My first attempt at a moon shot....is that a pun :-\

Hey Dr., did you get a new camera? I'm about ready to take the plunge too.

These two pictures are two of my favorite, which I took when we were on our cruise. I got these while the sun was coming up, early in the morning, coming into one of the Mexican harbors.

In the last several days I have noticed some really beautiful colors. Fall offers some great scenery.
Not fall but beautiful this flower I saw in Berkeley.

These are in many places in Wrightwood, this one is on Thrush & Sheep Creek. Love the red!

Even our Cherry Tree has some beautiful colors.

It was late and I didn't get a good picture of our Apricot tree but the yellows are spectacular. I'll try this weekend.

Mazzystar....what a great set of vaccation photos...The sunsets look great...relaxing...
And Chuck, I like those fall colors......they're intense!

firefightersteve,
I was going through the photos and saw one you posted on 9/11/06. I recognized it from a recent event.
I want to say thank you for everything you, Wildman, and Josh have done for all of us.

Hi FSfirefighter....
No effort should have been spared....
No offering could ever match what they sacrificed....
It's very nice of you to write....

What an adorable picture of a great kid. That's his color too. :D Give him one of those Arrowroot teething biscuits and see how he likes those. I did that with my oldest and it's one of my favorite baby pictures of him. Of course he would be mortified if I shared that now because he is 15 now.

Wonderful picture!! I'd forgotten what feeding time looked like so many years ago. Great photo.

Took this picture at sunrise. One of my first shots taken with a digital DSLr (XTi.) I bought it at Costco last night and I am trying to figure it out. Even with it being a consumer camera it has a lot of bells and whistles. ;D

Neat Ny pic, Surfer Dude .... Now don't be folding up your camera instruction book and put it inside a History book in class and be acting like your studying while you read the massive instruction book that comes with these new cameras. ;D

Very cool s-dude. I am hoping to study my xti manual over Christmas break. So far I take almost every picture on the dummy button. I like that one setting though where you can set the camera to take the picture at 3 different f-stops and then you narrow it down to find the perfect lighting.

Nice sunrise shot SD.
Looks clear enough to see Catalina between the pine branches

-
Funky, ever drive in LA?
Not really driving, just kind of sitting..... ;D
Don't be such an old man. ;) At 5mph, this is far less dangerous than talking on a cell or putting on makeup. I didn't even hold the camera to my eye; free shot.

He probably did it in Photoshop.

I took this in the Alabama Hills just west of Lone Pine. I saw a pic of this in our hotel and had to find this arch. Asked alot of people and no one knew. The article said take Movie Road and it's to the right??? I asked a man with a camera out in the hills and he reluctlantly told me the general area. We parked and hiked about 10 minutes and found it. To capture this shot, I had to climb into a small ravine btw two rocks and lean to get it. It was well worth it though.....
Lone Pine, Bishop, June Lake, Owens Valley are SOOO beautiful!!!
Happy New Year everybody!

That's beautiful.

Wow thats a great picture!

I was coming from The Land of OZ. ;)
No, it is a beginner photoshop trick. There is a lot to learn in photoshop, there are a couple of Wrightwoodians that create in it for a living.
Great photo Angelwolf.

I did a trial once and I couldn't figure it out ::)
-
Forest Gal, definitely go!!! I would wait til spring though as the hills might have some more color and it was VERY cold and windy!!! Trucks were tipped over on the way up there! Movie road is where all the old movies were filmed, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, i.e. movies. The rocks go on forever and are magnificant!!! But there are creeks and hills and mtns and so many things to see.......
Thanks!
-
Funky try PS Elements, it's much easier!
-
Thanks SD
-
Photoshop is the industry standard, if you learn the real version you will open yourself up to all kinds of career possibilities. You are enough of a comp- geek I think it would be good for you to take a class in it. Or you can just google photoshop tips.

I was so excited to be in the area to photograph Mono Lake. Well as we were making the decent into the valley, there was a huge wall of fog. I was so disappointed as I could not see the lake at all. But I was a good sport and figured there would be something to capture as I drove all the way there so I went walking and actually found alot to photograph. This is the first shot I got in the parking area. It was VERY cold and windy, but just around the lake. A few miles back it was blue sky..... I really liked the icy branches and the way there is almost no color in the shot.....
Thanks!

Most people don't know how cool June Lake is. We were there in September.
Great shots!!
-
Angel wolf, your photo of the ice waterfall is gorgeous. I really enjoy that one.
I am a photo shop fan. As a kid, I did a lot of experimental black and white photography, so enjoy photo shop for that sense of experimentation.
I like things that don't look too photoshopped if I can avoid it. But I'd like to show a photo that may be a little overdone. This is a photo of a christmas ornament. I took the photo and decided to turn it into what hopefully looks like a drawing far beyond what I could ever do. See what you think.

I love shots like these. This type of ice is known as either hoar frost or rime ice, depending on how it was formed. See:

I've got some old shots from Minneapolis like these from my college days. I'll see if I can dig them up. I think I scanned them a few years ago.
Thanks for sharing!

Neat pictures of the Museum in Bishop Angelwolf. It looks like time stood still.

Yes, Angelwolf, those pics are great! That dusty piano would fit right into my house - man, do I need to clean my house or what!! ;)

This morning I notice Wright Mountain Road all white with no cars anywhere. The bird was dive bombing me just as I took the picture. I took this with my new pocket Canon 7.2 MP SD800 IS. Its a cool backup that off offers very good video.
-
That SD800 takes really nice pictures.
-
Beautiful pic, Chuck! I couldn't see the bird until I clicked on "quote" so the pic filled the whole screen, there must be something wrong with my settings. I thought I had that fixed. Anyway, I set your pic as my new desktop for now, I love your pic!! :2thumbsup:
-
My pond waterfall doesn't look much like a waterfall lately. The waterfall is still there, all inside the new dome. It's strange looking and not really pretty.

I like the way that pond looks Chuck!
I sent in photos to the Mtr. Progress that I took of frozen sprinklers on a hill in Pinon Hills last week, I was so surprised to see one of my photos hit the front page of today's paper!!! It sure made my week!!
Here is the link in case you do not get the paper:

Neato!! I can't wait to get my paper today.
Chuck, I love the frozen waterfall. It is January, afterall, and neat that it is frozen. I've got an ice rink across the street because the street is shaded all day long. I wish I could figure a way to measure how thick it is.

Very cool picture!

Very cool, you are published!!! Frame it!

Angelwolf,
I was kicking myself this morning because I did not bring my camera. I actually slowed down (no one was around) just so I could look at the view. Thank you for taking your photo!
-
Your welcome, I ALWAYS have my camera, at least one of them. I love the wider area on the right where there is now room to pull over!!!
-
Beautiful photograph of LPC with the mashed potato clouds at the bottom and you sure lucky to have such an understanding boss to be able to do the creative frame at work! Our computers never had such cool software....we couldn't even draw a simple map.

Thanks WM.
My job is hit and miss with actual work. Sometimes I am very busy and sometimes bored out of my mind. He knows that I work on my photos and school stuff when I have down time and loves my work. He know that my job gets done and that's all that matters to him. I loaded my personal SW on my work laptop.
I appreciate the kudos from a great photographer.
-
Very beautiful photo!!!
Thank you very much. :D
-
WOW Angelwolf, great photo!!!!!
-
Great shot from LPC, Angelwolf! I remember the view being like that occasionally, when I used to work in San Bernardino. I'm not a photographer though....
You just keep getting better and better! :2thumbsup:

Angelwolf, I love the birds - I'm outta birdseed, gotta make a trip to Mt. Hardware in the morning! I know the juncos and the finches - what is the one in the top photo? And the lake pic is gorgeous!
BostonBob, those clouds are beautiful! I got home from work about 11:30 last nite and I could see stars in the sky - had no idea the clouds had been so incredible earlier!

I am a huge fan of ocotillos.

Thank you, I never thought of the desert as pretty. This last trip was great and I wanted a perspective similar to large Redwoods..... I believe I've become a fan of Ocotillos too! They were just starting to bloom!!
This photo was fun too!!

I like the fact that most people don't quite get the beauty of the desert. Keeps all the sand players away ;)
-
Ever read Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire?
-
I think I read a few of the chapters and never finished it. I will have to pick up a copy and give it another try..
I remember it took place near Moab and Arches.

Wildlife is much more active this March than normal and the hummingbirds are out in force.
This rofous isn't happy about the annas sitting on the feeder.

Very cool pic of the 2 hummers, Wrightwood! I just set this pic as my desktop background, replacing a winter photo I've had on there for a while. I need to get my feeders out......

Nice shots, Wrightwood!
It's awfully hard (for me anyway) to get clarity on these little guy's underbellies.
Where exactly did you find this one? We have a group of them that bed down on our front lot (LPC and Summit).
-
These guys were on Easter - not far from your house.
-
Beautiful pictures of the quail - she looks very healthy! :2thumbsup:
I just set the 2nd pic as my desktop pic, it's so pretty. Seems as if her little feet would be cold......
-
Pinionmesa jon, if you want to see quail come down to locarno/east cyn, we have about 3 coveys that live there, we feed them. :)
-
great shot ww, i noticed that the snow was particularly full of those glistening diamonds this morning!

Pinonmesa jon, if you want to see quail come down to locarno/east cyn, we have about 3 coveys that live there, we feed them. :)
Yeah; ours come into our backyard every morning, too. In addition to regular feed, we through out our scrap from our pet birds, so our wild birds get vitamin fortified diet! ;D
Don't you just love when their babies come out in the summer? :)

:) SD, Was that shot taken at Knott's Berry Farm?
-
It's actually Surfer Dude! He likes to dress up sometimes as an Indian Maiden.
-
Hobbes,
Yes, that was taken at Knotts Berry Farm. They have a deal right now for bringing in canned goods; only $20 for adults with canned good. I was able to support a food bank and be cheap at the same time.
Word to the wise, don't grow your hair long or Chuck starts having strange visions about you.
-
Well, I was having visions of you! Oh no, did I say that? Been hanging around Bob & John too long. :o :o :o ;D

Beautiful!

thanks!
-
The homes remind me of a Thomas Kinkade painting, especially with the light on the one at the end of the cul de sac. And the sky is to die for. It looks like a painting from Doug Oliver.
Simply beautiful.

My friend sent me this picture of her and her dogs where she lives in Alaska!
nice pic.. Where in Ak does your friend live?

She lives in Fairbanks!

Just returned from a trip to Washington state and the Skagit Valley. We floated the Skagit and saw at least 3-400 Bald Eagles of various ages and sizes perched along the river waiting for Salmon. This one looked over the valley with a majestic air about him and just tolerated us as we floated by on a raft.
This immature Eagle (still doesn't have a full set of white head and tail feathers) had just lifted off a sand bar to chase a Sea Gull with a scrap of Salmon as we quietly floated by.

I have a few more. You would be amazed how few photos turned out from 3 2GB photo cards. Thank goodness for digital....I could never afford real film.
-
How many pictures does a 2GB card hold? I don't know anything about photography, but to capture a bird in flight, as in the pic above, do you shoot at a fast - well, whatever, I can't think of the word I want. Anyway, I really enjoy your bird and animal pics! :2thumbsup:
Maybe what I was trying to say is shutter speed?
-
At the highest JPEG setting...around 350. I shoot at a fast speed and track my camera with the moving bird. I have a setting that will take 3 pictures per second. Thankfully for large storage cards....many of them are not in focus or poorly framed.
-
All right, all of you camera people! :2thumbsup:
I would like to order a plethora of great storm pictures!!
Carpe diem.

Great photo of the moon way back on the first page of this thread, John. I enjoy the softness of all the edges...

Nice pictures.

Jacuzzi size. :o
Those twinkie's are frosted.

I love my granddaughter. This reminds me of a movie scene I believe from A Christmas Story.
It also reminds me of the time we found Bob face down in the snow after another night of drinking at the Yodeler. His house is close by so he has a short walk. His outfit was similar.
-
That picture is just too precious!

I want a picture of you sitting in there.

Too far away but I love to watch these Quail that come by on a regular basis.
-
I have not seen Quail up here before. Thats a good pic.
-
We have tons of quail up here. On Orchard we have families crossing the road all the time. Our back yard is a crossing area too. I love watching the look out quail.
-
Try driving on Lark right at sunrise just below the swamp (near Mill). They cross that road going towards town. Then at sunset, I see them crossing the road to go into the swamp. I have to be careful every morning when I take the kids to school because they cross between my house and the school.
I grew up eating quail. Now that I've lived up here and see them daily, I don't think I could enjoy them the same way.
Beautiful picture of the quail. They always appear perfectly groomed. Has anyone got a picture of a ruffled quail?? Wildman??

Sunrise and sunset has always had meaning for folks. Engineer/PM Steve Turner from Station 101 shared that sunrise was God's way of welcoming new souls into Heaven. We've had a couple of spectacular one's lately.
-
Wildman, you made me want to share too. Those beautiful souls sent a message that day...here is the reason I thought that. When my SIL (more like a sister) passed last April and we were leaving the hospital, we were greeted by a rainbow. We took great comfort in that. That awful day at Mtn High, there was a beautiful rainbow, that lasted for over an HOUR! I have NEVER seen a rainbow last so long! So, to me, it was a message from those wonderful souls.....

Hey, what's the deal? I'm part Asian, part Hawaiian, and I don't even carry a camera around with me (my ancestors would kick me outta the Fuji Film Club). These pictures are unbelievable...they're great. You'd expect to see them in frames, being sold at local Craft Fairs. There's something to be said about getting away from the hustle and bustle of the flatlands that puts you more in touch with the artistic side of humanity.
-
Living up here gives me the ultimate in photo opportunities! I just have to walk outside..... It is one of the many reasons to live in Wrightwood.
Thanks for the appreciation of the photos posted here!
-
Angelwolf, these pics are amazing! The one above, with the birds in the icy pine tree, just became my new desktop photo! Do you know what kind of bird the one with the reddish head and breast is? Just beautiful! :2thumbsup:
-
That sure looks like a House Finch. They come in several color phases and love the seeds. The snow and cold don't bother them in the slightest.
This fellow doesn't eat seeds but Salmon. Along the Skagit River. We can see Eagles locally at Lake Silverwood, Big Bear Lake and Lake Hemet. They also live on Catalina Island.

Wow, between you two, I don't know what to put on my desktop! One of your eagle pics was on here for the last couple of weeks, Wildman. It's nice to have so many beautiful choices! Good job, everyone who posts these wonderful pics! :2thumbsup:

There are 3 finch varieties that are common to our area; the house finch, the cassin's finch and the purple finch (probably the least common). They look pretty similar. I'm no bird expert, so it may be any one of those. Just comparing the (excellent) shot with the images in our bird book, I'd vote for the Cassin's.

Thanks, PMJ. You post some pretty amazing photos on here too! Keep up the good work! :2thumbsup:

No I stood outside for a while with a black shirt, someone gave me that tip. I put my actual lens with the hood over it right on top of the flake... I took hundred of shots and I have a few more that I am working on. I used the imaging sw to change the color from black to green... You can see how close it is, this is a sweatshirt and you can see the actual fibers.
-
Thats a remarkable picture. Can't wait to see more ;D
-
Incredible!!! :2thumbsup:
-
I thought it was kind of flakey. :elefant:
-
Snowflakes are remarkable, aren't they? The cartoon on page 13 of Wright's Wood is made from a photo of an actual snowflake. You never would have known it huh? ;)
-
Great pictures, but, don't those little birdie feet get cold? ???
I have an idea....

But the Hummingbirds sure do. Most leave to go down to El Monte for the Winter but there are always a few hardy souls who enjoy the brisk air.

Great shot!

The photo was taken at the elevation level of Mountain Top a winter or two ago. We are at around 4,000 feet in the Chaparral. We have had the hummingbirds stay over since we moved here three years ago.

thank you all for sharing such wonderful photos with us. I look forward to these posts the most. :2thumbsup:

When I walked out the front door the other day, I heard Raven calling but couldn't find where he was. When I looked through my long lens, I could see him sitting on the hawk tree with the mountain in the background. You know you're finally retired when the view from your porch looks like this and finding a distant Raven makes your day.

There were some that went most of the lake the long ways, and many back and forth the short way. They were small prints, like kids.... I tried to capture but with the high contrast of the snow, near impossible...

Okay, here goes! I got a new camera (Pentax K10) and here are some of my first shots. I've never had an SLR before, and I was experimenting with my dad's lenses- I love that his film lenses fit on my digital camera! I was playing with depth of field and I'm happy with my results. Went fishing up in Bishop last two days on the Owens River. This is the view of the mountains with the smoke from the 1200 acre fire along the river. There was a 60 mph wind pushing the fire. Even with the smoke, the views were spectacular. I did catch a fish!

I love both your photos. What are the purple flowers? And your depth of field is done really, really well. Cheerfulkim, I love the orange of the poppys behind the purple flowers.
As for the Poppy fields, they aren't very heavy this year, are they? I think the area needs a good burn to allow the poppys to regenerate once again. If you saw these fields 15 years ago, they were wall to wall orange. The same on the mountainside leaving the AV at the 14/138 merge. I love spring. I would really like to get out to Death Valley and see the spring growth out there.

cheerfulkim,
Great shots.

Great photo, but too bad the cat has become so accustomed to people that it is not afraid to be so close to a house.

PinonMesa Jon,
I love my Pentax! You asked me a while ago what lenses I used to get the flower shots, but I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to take out my case. But here they are. My friend described them as "vintage" lenses! First I put on a Sigma Tele-Macro 2X-1:1, then I add a Soligar 80-200 Zoom+Macro, both film lenses. I have to set my camera to manual focus because these lenses are old! No auto focus- that's why some of my shots are a little blurry still. I really need to invest in a good tripod next. I still don't know what I'm doing, but I have so much fun going out and experimenting. I love doing the macro flower shots and playing with depth of field. Here's another one from last week.

I took these pictures this morning in my neighbor's yard. I love these tulips, because the neighbors are only here a couple of times a year and no one maintains the yard, and yet these tulips bloom faithfully year after year.

Great shots BPSquirrel!!!
And cheerfulkim, same for yours. I love the exposure and contrast that you got. Did you use AE for the tulip shots, or are you delving into your own exposure settings yet? Manual focus?
-
I'm still using the auto exposure, but I have to manually focus because I'm using my dad's old film lenses. I'm finally learning about the manual exposure, so I need to get out and experiment some.
-

Many times, manual focus is the best, depending on the subject. The 3 closeups from the Poppy Reserve above were taken with my 50mm f1.7 prime lens - the first lens I got with my first SLR back in 1986. :)

Just in case anyone checks the exif info on those shots, it's wrong. For older lenses that don't pass the focal length to the camera, the K10D asks the user to input the focal length, as it is a variable in the algorithm for the image stabilization. I forgot to change it when I changed lenses, hence the focal length shows up as 200mm instead of 50mm. :-\

really pretty pics... wanted to go there but couldn't make it... thanks for the great pics..........
