Do UIA and/or Charter offer static IP addresses?

Yes we do. It is $10 per month per Static IP

So it looks like I could be up and running quickly by going from that Ethernet connection to my existing router. I'm guessing I wouldn't get gigabit speeds, but it would still be many times faster than Frontier (and faster than my cable internet down the hill). Then later on (well, sooner rather than later) I could upgrade the router to get the full speed.
Depends a little bit on your existing router.

If it's the POS router that Verizon supplied with a built-in DSL modem, no.  You need an ethernet WAN port, not an RJ-11 telephone cable.

If you have a DSL modem that is handling the PPPoE stuff, and then a separate router connected via Ethernet, then the odds are quite good that you can just unplug the cable going to the DSL modem and plug into the ONT.

Disclaimer: I don't work for UIA, just did a lot of network engineering in the past.  What Wes is doing is BRILLIANT in its' simplicity.

Sure,

Send emails to fiber@uia.net - that way Laura and Kayla both get it.. she is pretty good on email so not sure what happened. PM me your email address so I can have her look for it..

Gotta say I'm pretty happy with the service from UIA now that I'm finally hooked up. They installed on Thursday.

In Sec 1 and have had service a few months now- I am curious how so many of you are getting such high speeds? I am not. It is frustrating. Look forward to figuring this out next week.

Hello Iris,

What hardware are you running on the network? Is it wired pr wireless? The reason why i ask is because the network will only be as fast as your slowest connection. With wireless standards there are different grades or speeds, 802.11 b, a, g, n, or ac. Each of these goes from slowest speeds to fastest.

Your router plays a massive role in the top speed of the network also.

I do not work for UIA, I just have done a lot of research on the subject. Also having a degree in network security helps also.

I have whatever equipment UIA used and setup. My 'connected' speeds to my laptop hover around 300 up and down speeds, but my wifi is around 93 download and 43 upload. It's ridiculous and my streaming cuts out- just like with the old internet but not nearly as often. Wifi devices are approx 12' from router.
These speeds are not close to what others are getting...

How old is your laptop? Do you know what speed wireless card you have?

I built my own PC a couple years ago for video editing and doing 3D and compositing work. It's got a pretty zippy i-7 processor, 32 GB of RAM, decent graphics card, and the system drive is an SSD drive. Since I built my own system, I don't have a bunch of manufacturer "bloatware" on there either to slow things down like HP puts on their systems.

It looks like the HP Envy from 2013 can't access 5GHz WiFi, only 2.4GHz which would explain your wifi speeds. Not sure what's going on with your directly wired speeds, but it's probably something to do with your system.

Your download speeds will vary with time of day. Around primetime when everyone is on in the late afternoons, I was pulling more of 600 Mb/s speed.

I'm sure UIA can send someone out to double check that you're getting the speeds you should be though.

According to Netflix, you need 5 megabits per second for HD quality video.

If you're getting 93 megabits download, that's 18 times more.

If the numbers you're seeing are in kilobits, then in the immortal words of Emily Litella "That's very different."

Since UIA provided your router, I think I'd talk to them on Monday and see what they have to say.

Yes, the support department can "see" the WiFi signals of the connected devices from the office..

Also the fact that it supports only 2.4 Ghz is an indication of an older chip set..

Still in no way should it be buffering.. something else is going on with that device. In any case we can check out the router remotely and see how it is connecting.

Thanks everyone! The laptop does seem to be the issue there. After speaking to Joe again today I am going through all devices and each connection to figure this out. He has been very helpful and is equally impressed with some of the speeds some you are getting  ;D

Through Google mesh router (but wired in).  I will get some wireless tests done after everything is setup.  Pretty sweet!

I did this test just a few minutes before posting.

The Google wifi was so easy to setup, it does almost all the internal configuration on it's own, but it does require a willingness to poke around in the options a bit.  I have quite a bit of LAN experience, and more than a little experience with WAN administration too, but I had my wife setup one of them and it was really just a couple of clicks on the phone and then showing the code on the back of the device to the app.  The app even took the picture itself.
