Hello,

Yesterday they were installing a home near Chaumont. We do have service in that area, but not in the underground portion. Please give me a call at 760-530-4872 if you have any questions or concerns.

Warm regards,

Kayla Ball

I just unplugged my router for about 30 seconds and plugged it back in per the "instructions".

Wes,  is this something we need to do to our routers?

https://www.today.com/money/how-protect-your-wireless-router-russian-linked-virus-vpnfilter-t129958
I'm not Wes, and I don't play Wes on TV, but here is the best answer.

If your router is vulnerable to (or infected with) the vpnfilter virus, rebooting it is a very good idea.

If your router is not vulnerable, rebooting it causes absolutely no harm.

I think you're running the Google WiFi router/access point, so I'd unplug the power from the one plugged into UIA directly, then unplug the other two, then plug them back in in the same order you unplugged them.

Haha, thanks.

Google WiFi routers are not vulnerable to this attack and further more they do automatic updates so I trust them.. mostly.
Our ReadyNet router is also not vulnerable to this attack.

Other popular routers are however, specifically the NightHawk which I think is a way overrated and under engineered router, just the worst.

My recommendation is to always purchase a router that makes automatic updates, much like computers do nowadays.

For all of those reading this thread;
Unplugging them is not a bad idea to reset everything but by no means a cure, a better router is the cure. If you don't like our ReadyNet that we supply or need whole house coverage and trouble free get that Google WiFi Mesh, I can't overstate how well this router works.

My comment was that rebooting a Nighthawk is probably a good idea, and rebooting something like a ReadyNet won't hurt.

Rebooting helps with this particular attack because someone did the forensics and found they could stop it by taking over a domain name.  That doesn't mean that the same rat-bastards(tm) won't have a new attack next week.

Rebooting your router could help this time, probably not next time.

Lots of developers build for cool functionality, but not security.

Slightly off-topic question:  If one has a Nighthawk router in a home that has a bazillion things connected to it (Alexa, window coverings, lights, etc) and one wants to instead use the Google Mesh that one has in a box and ditch the Nighthawk.  Is there an easy way to transfer all the devices to the new Google Mesh VS taking each individual device, connecting it to Google Mesh, inputting the password, etc.   ?

Yes, it's generally quite easy.

You need to know the SSID (name) and Passphrase on the Nighthawk (which you used to connect devices to it initially).

If you explicitly set the new router (or Mesh) to the SAME SSID and Passphrase, then everything will connect.

This fails if you simply don't know the settings and/or can't get them from the old router.  If you can log into the configuration settings, you can read it there.

Thank you!  I think I did this when I switched from Verizon to UIA and brought the ole Nighthawk online and it didn't work.  So perhaps I did something wrong.  I will follow your directions when I take the ole Nighthawk offline and bring Google online.  Thanks again!!! :)

Rebooting is just restarting the unit. What needs to be done is a factory reset. For example on a netgear 7900 router you need to push and hold the reset button with something like a paperclip for over 7 seconds. Before you start, go into your router and write down your setup information like your network names and passwords. Don't forget your security settings too. One last thing is check for a firmware update.

No, this is wrong.

Simply unplug or turn off the power, restart it. Change your WiFi Password. That's it.

The FBI warning is about a specific virus that has several parts.  The first part is a loader, and it goes to a domain to download the real payloads.  The Rat-Bastards(tm) no longer control that domain, so the loader can't load anything.

The payloads are in RAM, so restarting the router clears memory and that neuters *this* virus.

Resetting the router won't remove the loader, It'll still be there.  Hopefully a security patch/firmware update will come along later to finish mopping up.

That's why rebooting is enough for *this virus* and it's easier to say "reboot your router" than it is to say "reboot your router if it's one of these...."

There can be exceptions, but I'd expect almost everything in your house to see the Nighthawk go away and watch for it to come back.  It won't know that it's a new router if it has the same SSID and Passphrase.

You can plug the first Google Mesh unit into the Nighthawk so you can copy/paste the passphrase if it's a random collection of characters.

The other way to do this is to pick a new SSID and Passphrase that makes sense and is easy to remember for you instead of the random junk.  Sure, in the short term you have to change every device to the new credentials, but if it's easy to type you won't struggle with getting it right later.

The Verizon routers were clunky and outdated.  That may be the real reason you had to reset everything.

Making this stuff work is like the New York Times crossword puzzle and the best Pinball game ever at the same time.

I retired five years ago (in my early 50's).  Loved the business, hated billing and collections, broken wires and server glitches at 2:00am.

Not many today who do business like UIA -- most outsource as much as possible to Bangalore.

If you want to send something, here's an address:

BEHIND THE HOT WATER PIPES
THIRD WASHROOM ALONG
VICTORIA STATION

(bonus points for anyone who recognizes it)

Lwt42,

I did mention firmware in my first post. Wes does provide a great router but it is still a rental in my book. At some point it will have paid for itself and then become a revenue stream for UIA. It would be safe to assume that the ongoing rental fee is more like insurance so if the device were to fail, it would be replaced very quickly. UIA does provide great service.
I maintain various systems and equipment so I am used to frequent updates for security. What others decide to do is up to them. My goal was to let them know the bigger picture and what steps they can take to protect themselves.
