Current Status - Williams Fire 2002 "Angeles National Forest"
Final Update - Wednesday, October 9, 2002

Fire Information:   (626) 821-6700

Fire Status:
Percent Contained: 100%
Cause: Human "Under investigation"
Expected Controlled: October 11, 2002

Resources:
Hand crews 4        2 Engine Strike Teams        4 Water Tenders

Helicopters 4         1 Heli-tanker, 2 medium, 1 light

Current Fire Situation:
The Curve-Williams Fire Crews continue to make excellent progress in mopping up and extinguishing hot spots along the Eastern flank of the fire. Weather is expected to assist crews as they work on final mop up.

The fifteen (15) acre flare up that occurred West of Mt Baldy road on steep slopes between Cat Canyon and Dry Lake Canyon yesterday still has hot spots but was held to the area of the spot. Helicopters used water drops to take the heat out of the flare up and ground crews continue their work there and in Spruce canyon.

Crews are working on the Curve fire to put those hot spots to bed.

Resources are being assigned to all accessible flare-ups on both fires and helicopters are working those areas that are unsafe for crews. A Forward Looking Infra-Red system has identify all areas that still have heat in them and those areas are rapidly diminishing

By tomorrow, the resources assigned to the Curve-Williams Complex will continue to be returned to their home units as these fires scale down.

Type 2 Management Team Assigned to Curve-Williams Fires:
Because of activity on the Curve fire and the Williams fire, the Southern California Incident Management Team 2 (Conrad) has been assigned to manage the Curve-Williams Complex. Santa Ana winds blew several hot areas of the fire back to life. Resources will continue to diminish as they time out and the team is down sizing but the team will be supporting firefighting efforts on both fronts.

Concerns:
Concerns continue to be the heat, steep and rugged terrain and the continuing possibility of Santa Ana type winds. The winds will change to being from the Southwest, temperatures are supposed to cool and humidity is supposed to rise over the next week.

Road And Area Closures:
Emergency fire closure is still in effect for Mt. Baldy road North of Shinn Road. Only residents and trades persons are being allowed past the roadblock. It is anticipated that this closure will continue on as needed basis for as long as crews are working alongside the road.

Erosion Control
The Angeles National Forest and cooperating county, state and federal agencies are preparing a Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation Plan (BAER...pronounced 'Bear') to address potential erosion and noxious weed problems resulting from the fire. The draft plan will be available for public review this week at the San Gabriel River Ranger Station (626)335-1251. Landowners interested in adapting to further fire related changes to their property will be able to consult with rehabilitation specialists from several agencies.
