Wrightwood on Film
« on: Jan 08, 03, 12:57:30 PM »
A while back (about 2yrs ago) there was a movie filmed in Wrightwood for a made for HBO movie called The Day The World Ended (or something like that). I was wondering if anybody happened to have seen it as I don't have HBO or if you know if it has been released on video yet? Stars where Randy Quaid (cool person), Nastassja Kinski (no comment).

The reason being, I was an extra in the silly thing and would like to see what kind of B movie it turned out to be.

Oh, did anyone else participate in being an extra?
and
Have there ever been any other movies filmed in Wrightwood before?

I've nebber heard of that film.  Being an extra can be fun though, providing one doesn't do it for a living.  60.00 a day doesn't go very far.  My better half did it for a few years.  Almost made it to SAG membership.  Now, she lives with me in our windowless shed perched far up in the hills.  I tried it, too, for awhile, mostly on "The District."  Not even my 15 minutes of fame.  More like, a few minutes of obscurity.  Please, no autographs   8)

There has been quite a variety of filming in Wrightwood over the years.

A looooong time ago, back in the late 70's, the TV show "Emergency" was filmed up here. I was a waitress at Little John's restaurant at the time, and the two stars came in and had lunch. They were really rude and didn't even leave a tip.

Other tv shows and bits for movies have been done throughout the area. It's kind of fun to watch the filming and then see how it turned out in the end.

If it is already out wouldn't Nancy at the Videozone have ordered it specifically because it was filmed here?   Just a thought.   I might give her a call when the vzone opens.

Wrightwood,

It wasn't that one, it was the one were they built a prop diner across from Mile High Pizza. I was one of the "nosey town people". It was fun to see what goes into the making of a movie. That and to get paid for standing around all day, eating their food only to have them use you for a few minutes in two scenes was kinda cool too. They asked me if I wanted to continue being an extra in the rest of their filming down at their studio, but I don't drive so I didn't get to. :(  Oh well, it was fun to be able to get to do what I did.

I'll second the nomination for James Garner being the nicest actor....and he has a connection to Wrightwood, too!

They filmed an episode of The Rockford Files (yes, I know, I'm dating myself) in Wrightwood - at the Yodeler and Lyle's.  The shoot lasted two days.  I remember everyone milling around the village trying to get a closer look at James Garner...no luck for anyone on the first day.  Everyone had the "what a jerk - typical Hollywood actor" feeling for him.

The second day of shooting ended early and while they were packing up equipment, Mr. Garner got a barstool and placed it in middle of the street and sat there and signed autographs for at least 3 hours.  He talked with everyone and told stories and apologized for not being available the day before.....

It's nice to hear that he really is a nice guy.....

Well now, I  was wondering if there were other folks in your wonderful burgh who had dabbled in show business, and it's nice to see that there are.  I myself am an actor, and at some point want to base myself in Wrightwood, as I've written previously.  At first, it would be wise for me to be close to the action, so I'll try to live close to the playground, but as soon as I feel I can handle the commute, I want to be living in Wrightwood.  I will promise you here and now that if I pull the jerk movie star routine, you may all feel free to drag me behind the woodshed for a case or two of whoopass!  :D

Before the movie in question they filmed parts of "Black Sheep", with Chris Farley, and "Larger than Life", with Bill Murray right here.
Somewhere there is a "B" or worse movie about cowboys, injuns, and tha cavalry which accidently has my car in the background.
The videozone has the two movies I mentioned. :D

Many here have mentioned the Videozone.   It sounds to me like it's a good video store, which would be way cool as I would be a frequent customer, for sure!

Mountain Witch,
The movie you were referring to "The Day The World Ended" that featured Randy Quaid and partly filmed here in Wrightwood was aired today on Cinemax at 11:15 am!  What a conincidence that you were just asking about it!  I don't know when it wil be shown again because I did not see it on the play listing.  If I find out any other information I will let you know.

;D

I know that there was a movie filmed here sometime in the 30's or 40's at Holiday Hill,(which is now Mtn. High east). I belive it was called Snow Queen, but so far I havent been able to locate it on video. If anyone has any more info on it I would love to know ! Also Ive  heard that actor Lee Marvin was a long time resident  of Wrightwood and used to throw some Hollywood parties at his home here !

:)The Day the World Ended was filmed for HBO.  They used Mile High Pizza as their post office, built the fake diner across the street and filmed a lot of the outdoor scenes around Cedar, Evergreen and Apple.  (Mostly driving scenes).  You can see a lot of the street signs if you look carefully.  A word of caution, though.  It was a really bad movie.  You'd think with the cast it would have been better. Don't let young children see it...there is a very inappropriate sex scene!  And it wasn't really all that scary and the story line was just so bad and weak.  After all the excitement in town during filming, the end result was a real disappointment. :(
